Alright, this next entry will focus on Hayasaka’s character arc, backstory and her friends. After all, it’s a good idea to know about your waifu and the company she keeps. Fun fact: Ai is based on the celestial envoy from The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter who was tasked with returning Kaguya-hime to the moon.
Used spoiler tags as this won’t be seen in the anime for a while (S4).
First a little background on the Hayasaka family. They were a big name but ultimately lost to the Shinomiya family in a conflict and were absorbed. Ai Hayasaka was made Kaguya’s attendant at the age of seven. She carried out her responsibilities flawlessly and became the longest tenured servant at the Shinomiya household. Her daily routine wass grueling. From 6am - 12am, she carried out many tasks. In the morning, she supervised staff on preparing the Shinomiya house for incoming guests (menu and gardening), reviewed the daily budget, answered mail, and attended to Kaguya. At school, she watched Kaguya from behind the scenes. And after school she prepared Kaguya for the evening guests, all the while managing her own duties.
The toll this took on Hayasaka was quite heavy. The time she has with her parents is minimal. When she was younger (~8 y/o), she actually ran away because her mother lied to her about spending time together. And then there’s the various personas (maid, gyaru, student at an all girl HS, and male butler) she had to take up to manage different situations, losing her sense of self. She was unable to have a normal HS life, which was one of her biggest desires.
The worst part of her job was having to report Kaguya’s every action to the main house. Oko Shinomiya (Kaguya's oldest brother) exploited her family’s standing and ordered Hayasaka to do this when she was seven. Deceiving the person most precious to her, crushed Hayasaka:
Shortly after Kaguya’s began dating Miyuki (male MC) and they were officially a couple, Hayasaka decided to resign and leave Kaguya. She believed that Kaguya with Miyuki and her friends at the student council would be better off. She decided parting ways instead of facing Kaguya because the thought of Kaguya hating her was the thing she feared most and couldn't bear. However, through another one of her brothers, Kaguya learned the truth. Ultimately, Kaguya not only forgave her, but also empathized with her. One of the most emotional moments in the series:
Now their relationship is stronger than ever. Also, Miyuki has become one of her good friends, and he was the first person to recognize Hayasaka was in need of help after she resigned. They’re also rap buds . And hey, double date with MH’s best pairing (2020) . And her friends at school, Mirin Hinokuchi and Subaru Suruga, always have her back . I think it’s great that she’s surrounded by friends she can count on, pick her up when she’s down, and relax and be herself with.
Kaguya
Miyuki
Mirin and Subaru
And the biggest thing is Hayasaka is now free. The walls surrounding her heart are down, the masks are gone, and she can make the most of her life. Find love, go to Disneyland, make cup noodles, and much more!
