Additional Notes:
This manga was based upon AKB48, a real Japanese girls group. Their name comes from Akihabara (Akiba) where their very own theater is located. Yasushi Akimoto (is featured quite a bit in the manga) is the producer who came up with the idea of creating a girl band that could perform on a daily basis for the fans. There are three main teams, Team A, Team K and Team B. Just like the manga, there are kenkyusei or trainees.

There are also the HKT48 (Hakata-ku, Fukuoka, Fukuoka),NMB48 (Namba, Osaka), and the SKE48 (Sakae, Nagoya) groups. These groups are geographically located in different parts of Japan. It is assumed that these national sister groups each have their own sub-teams.

Another group worth mentioning is the adult-themed SDN48 group. This group was poised for an 18+ audience. Presently, all members of SDN48 has graduated and SDN48 is inactive. Though, from time to time, they hold specials with AKB 48.

There is also the international sister group (JKT48) which is based in Jakarta, Indonesia. In 2011, Yasushi Akimoto exported the concept of AKB48 into Indonesia due to the large fan population thus JKT48 was born.

Another sister group is the SNH48 which is the Chinese group. Another Chinese group is the Taiwanese TPE48 group.

Interestingly enough, Yasushi Akimoto created a rival group of AKB48 named Nogizaka4. They were officially announced on June 26 2011.

Short Summary:
AKB49 follows the legendary 49th member, Urakawa Minori as she rises up to become a star. Though she may be hard pressed, she overcomes the obstacles which are placed in her way with amazing endurance.

Art:
The art is sketchy but solid Japanime style. I enjoy the fact how there are a variety of characters of different ages that plays a pivotal role in the story. The variety of different character designs and environmental designs displays the artistic skills of Miyajima Reiji.

One of my pet peeves is that the toes are not so well drawn.

Characters:
Urakawa Minori
A girl who seemingly becomes the center of attention of the mysterious Yasushi Akimoto, producer of AKB48. She was first noticed during an initial AKB48 tryout. Her strong-headedness has allowed her to become more and more noticeable by other members.

Yoshinaga Hiroko
The co-heroine of the story. She is softspoken and very intelligent. She was able to pass the AKB48 tryouts when Urakawa Minori bad mouthed Maedan Atsuko. Being a huge fan of Maedan Atsuko, Yoshinaga Hiroko interrupted Urakawa in defense of Maedan Atsuko who was also in the same room.

Urayama Minouro
A boy who supports Yoshinaga Hiroko with his all.

Akimoto Yasushi
He has taken an early liking to Urakawa Minori. Throughout the manga, he is the one who is supporting her and even pushing her.

Impression:
Being able to see the struggle of girls during the progression of becoming an idol was what kept me reading. They overcome the obstacles in front of them to become a superstar idol. I can't even imagine trying to stand out in such a group knowing how others might try to sabotage or even threaten me.

Recommendation:
Perhaps any fans of AKB48 and its sister groups might enjoy AKB49 - Renai Kinshi Jourei. Others that might enjoy a story about two girls helping each other and winning the support of others might also enjoy this manga.
