Hard category, all entries expect for Isabella are worthy. Bit iffy about Meruem too. Both characters are great, don't get me wrong.

I voted Isabella for the villain of the year. She is a great refreshing villain type. I really admire how she is built. She isn't evil in the core, but the environment molded her into a cog in the system and she thinks it's for the best just to keep the engine in good oil instead of trying to change the design with a risk of everything exploding. But she isn't exactly unique in that aspect. And way too fresh and under developed to compete here. Who knows, her part in the whole story and possible development might still change to promote the character to the next level.

Meruem had great development. He evolved from a beast to a man after falling in love - but it was too late as he had already made too many enemies. As corny it sounds, it was so damn good character arc. But bit too clear and simple. It lacked nuance.

Guts. I don't what to say really. His journey is so heart-wrenching that it hurts to even think about something to say about him. He is well written character whose life story is portrayed masterfully thorough the series. Ultimate shit-hitting the fan survivor.

Another heart-wrenching character is Johan. His emotionless intelligent charisma sends chills down the spine, and the more his history is is unraveled thorough Kenmas investigation, the hate and fear changes into sorrow and sadness towards the manipulative nihilistic yet somehow so charming bastard.

Musashi is also another character development masterpiece. From a brash boy to a world renown warrior philosopher - his story is truly fascinating.

Askeladd. Oh god how I love that shrewd bastard. Even if his morals are questionable, you can't deny the smarts he has and his goals.

So hard. I'm struggling with the latter 4 seriously.

Johan is the only winner here. Easily. Guts is brilliant, and is one of the best main characters I've ever read on, but I believe Johan is far better fleshed out as a character:

Brilliant dialogue:

An amazing dynamic with the protagonist of the series, Doctor Tenma and his sister, Nina, which are the heart and soul of this manga:

An excellent villain, one of the best in the medium:

I mean, seriously people, even when crossdressing he looks fine af :smugbunny
And he also showcases emotion, so him being flawless isn't exactly true. He's still a human like every other character in tha tmanga:

Vote Johan Liebert!:smugbunny
Make MH Great Again!:cheerbunny:confetti

Funny, I find Johann so horribly overrated... he felt more like a concept or tool to me, and less like a character. Tenma or Grimmer were way more interesting and fleshed-out characters I actually cared for, Johann not so much. Him being a rather meh villain in the end held the whole manga back, in my eyes. He's probably one of the main reasons why I wouldn't say Monster is amazing, though it still remains a good story.

But enough with bashing xD My vote goes to Guts, definitely deserving in my eyes.

What a fantastic final! Cannot really go wrong here, and @Emperor Spriggan showcased a lot of Johan's strengths well.

I find Johan to be a very well written character. I suppose he had to be for the manga to be as loved as it is, considering the majority of it is a character study on him. However, gotta go with Guts here (not surprisingly with my Avatar lol). The one area Johan never really grabbed me as much as I wanted was on an emotional level. He was fleshed out largely from afar, as we saw the characters unravel the mystery behind him and his origins. And while he certainly was charismatic and captivating when on panel, I always felt a disconnect because of the intentional space the author put between the reader and him most of the manga. This does not lower him as a villain necessarily, but it does lower my investment in sympathizing with what happened to him.

Guts, on the other hand, really made me feel the weight of the journey, as well as the ups and downs he has gone through. He developed from a typical action hero badass to a more nuanced and wiser guardian.
They both do their jobs as a villain and mc respectively very well imo. So I don't think there is much of a gap here, but I gotta go with the one that made me feel more emotional impact.
