It takes a special type of person to love someone else and not be with them because you think they deserve better, and I think thats what Jellal is to Erza.
Jellal and Erza´s relationship is among the best written ones within Fairy Tail, it´s a fairly generic tragic past story but also involves a Shakespearen character in form of Jellal that´s haunted by the sins of the past.
