Yeah, Gray is a really good character, one of the best in fact.

Though I think Hiro tried to hard to make him too dark. It's good and bad at the same time.

Then we got this arc where I didn't find him likeable at all.

Jellal is good but too emo.

Laxus got good development but that I'M FIRED UP line was cringe.

To be fair, there weren't many likeable characters in this arc, someone said it the best, the less panel time you get, the more likeable you will be in this final arc. Such a shame, that Mashima stopped caring about the characterization of his characters he built up for many many years, and went with whatever BS he can think of to quickly end the manga.

but yeah as you said, Gray is normally an excellent character overall.

I'm not a huge fan of Jellal, but his magic is awesome.

Overall, this post is also directed @Brandish, since he liked your post, so perhaps he may appreciate my thoughts.

Gray's devil slaying magic makes him go insane, if Invel is to be believed. So he went crazy against END, a demon. The writing of this magic fits in with Gray's character, namely the theme of vengeance.

Jellal is little bit too emo but both of them are good developed characters and badass.

Laxus was the brattiest badass, or the badassest brat! He ultimately kicked out the brat in him, which I'm unsure if it's to my liking...

Jellal is alright. Liked him better as a villain. I secretly hate him for indirectly putting Mystogan to eternal slumber.. R.I.P Misty.

Laxus is more badass indeed but I'm going with Jellal because I liked him since the very beginning and I'm a Crime Sorciere diehard fan...

I thought Jellal was great as a villain. I think it would have been better for him to stay a villain for longer, but when he became a good guy, he was pretty boring in my opinion and his whole emo-ness with erza was annoying. Laxus has always defined badass for me in fairy tail so I'll have to give the edge to him despite the disgrace of "im all fired up"

Between the two, Jellal is more relatable and has a better backstory. Most of us would understand what it's like having a goal and being unable to achieve it for a very long time. Progression probably goes to Laxus (even though Jellal has progression as well). But personally, I don't feel connected to his character.

Well to be honest jellal never achieve his goal even at the end of manga(his goal was to finish zeref and he didn't come face to face with him, talk about a wasted moment). I agree with you on your whole point and will add this jellal's backstory was so sad that it makes you sympathize with him. Needless to say both characters are in high list of my favorite chars. I would be happy if anyone wins it.

Laxus for me, Jellal has cooler magic but as a character he's just too boring, was much better as a villain. Plus his ship with Erza is just plain disgusting
