How do you like the 1999 anime dub?

And who do you want for the dub of the 2011?

Also a question in particular to those who speak Japanese and English.

How does your being bilingual affect your appreciation of both subs and dubs?
Has any subs gotten better or worse? Has any dubs gotten any better or worse?
Also how has it affected both the sub and dub of Hunter x Hunter in particular?

I've only seen clips of the English dub. I first watched the subbed 1999 version, so when i heard the dub i sort of got bothered by it. So i never really tried the dub out.
Good questions though..

When you say "our 99 dub", you mean the Tagalog dub, right?
I never actually heard the animax asia english version only the North
America/Europe Viz version. Wonder if I can find that version anywhere?

yes ....
Off course I first watch the tagalog dub, then after the series ended in my country (ova 1 doesnt exist yet that time) I try to find the early subbed versions(jap dub) of hxh... I dont have a problem with both dubs...
the tagalog dubs retains the original name of the following, they never translated them... in fancy english...
Genei Ryodan
Senritsu
Injuu
Nostrad
etc...
even in the commercials the original Togashi romaji named was used
Hyskoa
Curarpikt
Zaoldyeck
etc...
I heard the animax asia dub (actually give it a try since I miss HxH back then after a few episodes I quit), and its horrible... so I stop... watching it there years before...
and Kurapika's gender wasn't question that much in our country, since the people in some trivia segments (these are tidbits commercial before about anime) confirmed already that Kurapika was male (since they phoned Togashi coz back in 1993 they already made a dub mistake on Kurama
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s9dRONSTXM
to hear Kurama's tagalog female voice switch at 5:45

it was later corrected in the following episodes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-_rP5jtExI
back then they change their names... early anime studio dubs have no idea.... the manga exist...

)...

Dubs on my language were awful. Gon sounded scared all the time and it was the worst.
I never heard '99 version with the real voices until 2008 when I re-saw it. It was better but to be honest I'm only paying attention to voices right now when my love for anime and manga is at its highest.

Oh my goodness, Hisoka is amazing here. And I really like the script and translation they used.

Really? I didn't know this. That's kinda amazing. I didn't know they actually phoned Togashi. I'm kinda fond of how animes are dubbed here, lol. When I decided to watch the 99 series via internet, the first thing I thought was, "Wait a minute. I've heard this OP before." I think I watched a few episodes before when I was younger, but I didn't catch on. But yes, I would generally pick Tagalog/Filipino dubs over whatever Animax Asia comes up with. Animax Asia always makes things sound forced and awkward, and I cringe a little inside whenever it gets really bad.

Viz is good with dubbing. I like what they do better over whatever Animax Asia does.

Yes the studio behind the dub (if I'm not wrong Telesuccess) made commercials about anime trivia before and thus confirmed that time that kurapika was male even though there is an episode where we can see clearly boobs and kurapika acts girlie. Thus unintentionally Togashi help the dub team pick a soothing voice for Kurapika. If only I had a recorder I could record the old commercials promoting hxh back then...

Since Funimation is most likely 100% going to dub the 2011 version I'd like to see Stephanie Young as Kurpika, Mike McFarland as Netero (although this pretty much a for sure given), and either Sonny Strait or Vic Mignogna as Leorio (although it's without a doubt going to be Sonny Strait)

I've only watched a few dubs, and while I generally prefer to watch things in their original language, there have been a few series that I've watched which I prefer dubbed (Outlaw Star, Evangelion and Baccano! for example). If anyone should dub Hunter x Hunter, then it should definitely be Funimation. Without a doubt the best dubbing company out there at the moment (at least in English).
