Re: manga for learning japanese

Moved your thread here. For some websites, you can refer to this post "Help with Learning Japanese"
As for manga, Kirimi ever suggested that we can always start with those children's manga first, after which, moving to any series in Shonen Jump (Naruto, Bleach) should be easier. :amuse

Re: Easy/Baby Manga to practise

OP is relatively heavy on the dialogue (remembering from the few times I transed that). I would suggest you go for something that you already read and know the storyline. Another thing to do is, trans something that a more experienced translator has already done, and compare your transes to theirs and see where you need work on. I don't have any particular series to recommend since I haven't picked up a manga in a long time, and I don't rate the difficulty of the JP, but pick something mainstream. Naruto or Bleach is pretty easy I think. It gives you more access to translations done by others.

Hope that helps some. :)

Re: Easy/Baby Manga to practise

Just as WinterLion said the mainstream manga's such as Bleach and Naruto, may be your best bet for learning and improving your japanese. With such manga your resources include official as well as fan translations that you can reference when you are checking your own translations.

For instance with Naruto there have been a number of translators that translate the same weekly chapter. There were also compilations of those translations that allowed for the appreciation of other styles, and interpretations, as well as the catching of the occasional mistakes.

I'll see if any of those compilations still exist for you. However in the meantime I'm sure you will be able to find translations that you can compare your own to by filtering out the english translations by manga.

Unfortunately I can not find all of the compilations if the others still exist, but there are 22 of them that I am able to locate. Since the original thread and section no longer exist the best I can do for you is copy them into this thread I guess.

A few things lost from a direct copy are the color coding of the different translations. So rather than color you will have to go with the order of 1st tora-chan, 2nd HisshouBuraiken, 3rd Carlos Net(cnet), and 4th Gokuro-3

Legend: Blue: tora-chan Lime Green: HisshouBuraiKen and Red: Carlos Net and Orange: GOKURO-3

Right now that is the earliest compilation that I can find. If the others still exist they would also be compilations from part 2 of Naruto perhaps an arc or 2 earlier.

Re: Easy/Baby Manga to practise

For a lack of a better place to put The Compilation Thread, it's sitting in the Translator's Helpline for now. :p Ghostie, feel free to move it around the boards as you see fit and maybe even clean up some of the comments in it so it's a listing of just compilations. I just grabbed it out of the archive and moved it here. :sweat

I would suggest you start with Naruto since the translations are so easy to come by and there's multiple translations for each chapter. :)

Re: Easy/Baby Manga to practise

Could anyone sugest me some non battle manga to start translation? I don't wan't to say naruto or Bleach are bad, but i realy dislike them. I like more slice of life types but good ones(recently read X-Day that was great one for me) are moustly seinen or josei, witch means they don't have furigana. So i would have to try to chew through kanji when i remember less than 50 :( makes pain in the ass to find right one, or chew through series i dislike :( both options are bad :(.

Re: Easy/Baby Manga to practise

I would recommend something from magazines like Ribon, Nakayoshi, or Ciao. Unfortunately, these are *very* shoujo and you'd probably have to weed through a lot of crap before finding a good one, but they're there, I promise. I personally find stuff like this easier to translate anyways since I don't have to worry about battle-specific terms and can focus on more everyday-style speech and phrases.

Good Manga to start translating

Hi there, I am a guy who's attempting to teach myself Japanese. I am starting to recognize many Japanese Hirigana and Katakana symbols. I am looking for a very simple Manga that i could use the raw of to try to translate to further accelerate my learning. It needs to use either only Hirigana and Katakana or have well readable Furigana. I appreciate your assistance in this manner. Thanks a lot in advance.

Re: Easy/Baby Manga to practise

I'm also looking for a children's manga or the equivalent type of thing... I know all the kana (even if I get some confused at times), and around 30 or so kanji. So, are there any recommendations that I could hunt down the RAWs for?

I really don't know much 'easy' manga out there. I've been translating (or trying my best) using the internet as my guide.

Re: Easy/Baby Manga to practise

First things first, before you start translating, is to read it on its own terms.

How can you expect to understand anything when you're beginning to learn a language, AND beginning to learn how to translate?

Step 1: Learn the language

Step 2: Learn to translate

Translating requires a solid understanding of the initial language and the target language.

I saw on Yahoo! Answers when I googled "Japanese gba game list" so I could figure out which ones I wanted to play, and this is what it was:

"What is a good game on Gameboy Advance to practice reading my hiragana? I know Pokemon is in hiragana but I would like to play something with more story."

My answer would be that since you are just starting to learn how to read, so-called "simple" games such as pokemon are actually ideal for practice. Most, (but not all!) games that have a huge storyline usually assume that you have firm reading skills in Japanese. Pokemon is easier to read, and has lots of explanations of game terms. If you make connections between game terms and language, eventually you can understand the more advanced games.

Games with heavy storyline usually don't talk about the gameplay mechanics. Sometimes there are tutorial modes but if you don't know a lot of kanji, these games are going to be hard to read. I just remember about 2 years ago when I tried to read Xenogears... total disaster! I tried playing it again after 2 years of studying, having MANY "AH-HAH!" moments about kanji and general language usage, and just plain READING a TON of manga (Matantei Loki!) to see the kanji more often, and I was actually able to follow along with the text!

Just start out with the beginning reading and work your way up. You'll never learn anything if you just try to read stuff that you don't understand. You'll probably just give up like I did. Luckily I didn't give up on the language, and just "lowered my standards"

I say that in quotations because once you actually get into the so-called "kid's stuff" it's actually more interesting than the "REAL stuff" that you enjoyed IN ENGLISH!!!!!!!

Remember that what you enjoyed in English was only enjoyable because you actually UNDERSTOOD IT!!!

Anyway back to the Yahoo! Answers page, it ended up not having a single response with a game title!!! The "Best" answer was someone telling the original poster to "do some flash cards and study out of a textbook."

Which is good, but that's not what the OP was asking, and also, they are limiting themselves, since anything with writing is good for learning, because you learn the most in ANY language from reading.

This is not an answer to the question, but I personally think the person should save up money to purchase a DS and DS games instead. DS games are not regional coded unlike DSi games, and Japanese DS games run just fine on international DS machines. (A DS machine also runs Gameboy Advantage games unlike DSi. I have a Japanese Gameboy Adv software running on a US DS.) There are many Japanese DS software available for Japanese children to learn the written language. For advance Japanese learners, Professor Layton series have great story lines. Be careful however when you chose a title. "Akuma no Hako" (The Diabolical Box) was actually released before "Layton Kyoju to Fushigi na Machi" (Prof. Layton and the Curious Village) in Japan, so that the written Japanese does not have furigana/yomigana (ruby). I would recommend newer Prof. Layton series. Check to see if the software has furigana before making a purchase. (Btw, I have a couple of Reborn and Bleach Japanese DS games. They are not good titles to learn Japanese. Avoid action games.)
