Ever since the Netflix LA, I start asking this question. Some of the largest One Piece youtuber GLR (1.13 mil), Ohara (1.05 mil), Tekking101 (0.719 mil). Discount other streamers that are known for bigger things like Hasan or Ishowspeed. IMDB had 178k ratings. The largest number when compare to big hitter like Yaiba, Dragon Ball, Naruto. Myanimelist had 584,701 members for the manga and 2,221,218 members for the anime. But they don't necessary be fans. Because some of them may had drop it early on, or grade it terribly. The largest number among these would be the 2.3 mil members of the One Piece subreddit. But this is all but mostly English speaking world and sometimes outside of English speaking world but communicate in English.

Twitter had 2 mil followers, Instagram had 2.1 mil. These folks can be cross over with the Japanese section.

So far, we coming out with a number of said 2 mil +. Though with so many limitations. With the release of volume 103 in Japan, One Piece reached 516 mil sales. So if we doing conservatives and divide this number by 103. Like the assumption is fan bought 103 volumes. We looking at 5 millions. But, the release schedule is all over the place across the world. And some are still collecting volumes. If said, a fan had 50 volumes. Then the number of fans would be 10 mil. And 25 volumes average, number of fans would be 20 mil. Fanatics may have multiple copies of the same volumes. But a large section of One Piece fans read digital via the website, or library, or pirate. So they don't accounted for in these sales. Some are anime only folks also. Godforbid, with the series ongoing since 1997, some of the fans also died off.

So what do you guys think? At minimum we looking at 2-5 million fans. Harry Potter had 500 million sales but there are way less books. Divided by 7, you looking at 71 million fans and less (if they include a bunch of other extra books). But for sure, fan of One Piece would ended up spending way more money than a Harry Potter fan if they keep up with everything.

Edit: Facebook showed 6 millions follower too. Hmm, these things are interesting to me in term of business decision made by Netflix. Like how much money are they willing to risk. Harry Potter is like 69 million on facebook. JK Rowling even before all the controversies (aka people following or unfollowing on her politics), she had like 13-14 million followers on twitter. The One Piece fandom is nowhere as big as the Harry Potter fandom for sure.

Harry Potter wins. The books sold 600 copies vs 500 from One Piece volumes. Plus it's 7 books vs 100 volumes.

One Piece was way closer to Potter before Potters numbers got updated by a +100mil, clearly these numbers aren't that representative actually but more like estimates based on prints in circulation (same as with One Piece). The chance of One Piece outselling Potter by these metrics is very large as Potter is over and One Piece is not and will have spikes around certain events, particularly the end of the series.
Wether or not Harry Potter will have these spikes will depend on the succes of its future media products but its not under a good pretense with all the bullcrap JKR is sprouting people will eventually get tired regardless of their stance.

And of course, One Piece is published in Shonen Jump first, including its digital format. That alone is a whole different dimension of print.

What one should also keep in mind is that Harry Potter is from the UK and originally written in english, and this internet world is entirely dominated by the english language and its 65 Million people homemarket is entirely represented within it.
On the other hand, One Piece is from Japan and originally written in japanese, and very popular in Asia as well as many other non-english speaking countries. Language and script barriers hinder communicating with this world severly, still and its not represented in this internet world that much, including its homemarket Japan.

Also, Harry Potter was published like 20 years ago - most people who read it are already over it and there are many who didn't like it at all and just read it because everyone else did, or stopped liking it as its tone of storytelling changed (like me).

The prequel movie series is like... lame ass, no one cares about it. It's definitely a flop considering how other early 2000s movie franchises like superheroes or Star Wars still dominate the movie sector today. They also have been criticized heavily for their quality, not a good indication either.

The last time a Harry Potter product had hyped was recently with the videogame. In the wake of its cancellation attempts wave many gamers admitted they give a crap about the Harry Potter universe or JKR of which they are not a fan of, and just wanted to play an open world action-RPG with magic.

Lastly, reading is becoming less popular in general and at a much faster pace than anime, which is probably gonna stay, just further and further digitalized and more in a niche than during Pokémania and the following merchandise anime times.

I don't know anyone still occupied by the Potterverse, Anime and particularly One Piece (and other "big" series like DB, Naruto) is very popular among muslim teens here.

One Piece is mainstream pop culture right now it has easily 60 mil+ fans.

Different format is different format, but if you equalize One Piece to what "book" means in case of the Potter series, then One Piece is two books, so it is actually 2 vs 7.

The original Harry Potter movies among the best movie series ever made.

The Fantastic Beast movies range from mediocre to bad... it's a waste of time.

I would argue the opposite, the sales of the games prove that being canceled on Twitter doesn't mean anything in the real world.

IMHO the sales are far more impressive coming from 7 books vs 100 comics.

And I'm sure the sales of the books doesn't compare to how many people watched the movies, while the One Piece manga is not that far behind the anime in popularity.

Yeah, exactly. It's already going downhill.

No, we are actually in line here; gamers do not care at all about the background of their media. I also mentioned in the OPLA thread that there is no critical reception of video games; their is no in-depths reception of their content either.

This is true for many video game franchises. No one reads Batman comics in Germany, yet the Arkham series was fairly popular. With the Witcher, I doubt most players actually know there are books in the first place. The largest chunk of players of that new game don't have any further connection to Harry Potter other than being in the open-world-fantasy-rpg demographic. The license in this case exists soley as a bait with familiarity, as these unbothered and uncaring people (that most gamers are) also have it really hard to get into something new.

Just take a look at how far they stretched the "assassin" setting of Assassin's Creed; into pirates and vikings, and egyptians and stuff; it's pretty clear here that the developers just want to make historical open-world action-RPGs, but need a door-opener to pass it off to the GTA kids.

Anime games are an exception to this rule, hence why they are always so terrible. Basically the closer your gaming audience is actually attached to your licenced medium, the worse the game will be, because a fixed stock of players will buy it anyways.

IMHO the sales are far more impressive coming from 7 books vs 100 comics.

We are comparing volumes vs books. Asoiaf is 5 books, here in Germany it is published in like 20 volumes because the translation boasts up the size - each volume is twice as large as the original book of which it is part from. I don't think they'll accomodate for that when they list sales, and each german volume is counted as a full book.

If we follow JKRs logic of what defines a book for her series - each book representing a timeskip - then One Piece is two books. But the entire logic is flawed anyways, One Piece is primarily published in Jump, and a large chunk of its billions of sales could be accredited to One Piece if we go by the popularity polls.
One Piece is not designed by Oda with a "book" format in mind at all, and the "10 chapter each volume, make us a cliffhanger" is Jump's jurisdiction and not Oda's planning.

The Manga though is far, far behind the anime. 9.5 out of 10 fans lack the literacy the skills to read it, many also lack the economic and social capacities to get into reading in the first place/they don't grow up with it. Manga, in most parts of the world is an exotic niche medium, anime is mainstream.
This is something largely unknown by the more literated members of society but a large part of people even in western countries cannot read well enough to occupy themselves with written media; if you are much slower with reading and understanding, it will also be much more tiresome, so those people avoid it. It's the reason why yellow press is all pictures and just the most mimimum amount of the catchiest and most provocative text.

Again, here in Germany, most fans are working class muslims with low to moderate educational degrees and sometimes difficulties with the english language - which are a reasonable part of the population here. The chance that you find someone clearly identfiying as a One Piece fan through clothing or tattoos in public spaces such as McDonald's, shopping malls, train stations, etc is very high.

The only other One Piece Manga reader though I have ever met was a 38 year old working colleague who had a Mugiwara tattoo but also admitted he hadn't read since Dressrosa arc (while this was in WCI times). All other people (like 3) got into the Manga thanks to me. Book stores have large Manga sections but no customers in general and are closing one after another.
