Out of all the unexpected moments and twists in One Piece, the only one I can't imagine a single reader was even close to considering figuring out is this. Duval's true identity.

I have never seen so many people guessing at so many different things on all the forums. Is it someone Luffy's beat earlier in the story? Someone from Luffy's past? An obsessed fan? Nope, it's a guy whose life was ruined because he looks like Sanji's fugly wanted poster. That is absolutely genius.

And if anyone ever claims they called it, I'll send them a bag of bull's feces in the mail because they seem to enjoy that sort of thing.

My initial reactions to some of these nominated moments:

Buggy becoming Shichibukai: "Oh, it's confirmed, finally, now people can let it rest." (was not surprised)

Sabo returning: Same as above.

Sanji being royalty: "Oh, those theories about Sanji being a noble/celestial dragon weren't too far off." (neither surprised nor unsurprised)

Luffy using CoC at Marineford: "Wow, he took out so many! Still, we knew he could use that sort of haki and has arguably the strongest will in the series, so.." (was impressed, not surprised)

WB saying "One Piece exists!": "Well obviously."

Granted, some of these being unsurprising depends on how much you've been reading fan theories. If you read the entire series in one go without time between chapters to form theories etc, some things which might be obvious to some can blow your mind. I don't mean to be dissing anyone else's opinions here, just offering my view on some of the nominations.

Well, you've told very good moments. I think Oda does a magnificent work displaying a surprised character, so...

@Shobu_Yoruichi Not sure you understood the category correctly. It isn't about "Favorite Surprised Moments" (as in, favorite moments where the characters are surprised), but rather about moments which surprised/shocked us as readers.
Unexpected things coming to light, moving the plot in a direction no one would've predicted etc.

Still, all of those panels are absolutely hilarious so thanks for your post anyway.

Second nomination: Zoro, vanished.
I remember my reaction to this. I just sat there, mouth open, checking for the next page which wasn't there. Entere some sort of shock for a short time. In the midst of the most chaotic and panicked moments in the entire series, something like that happens and the readers are as much at a loss for words as the characters.

I'll go with Kaidou's entrance for now. Really had no idea what it was building up to, but it paid off tremendously. Epic!

Reminded me of the "epilogue" right after Whitebeard's death, listing all his injuries and whatnot!

Thanks for putting some of mines!
I will go for the Going Merry rescuing the crew at Ennies Lobby. The entire build-up for that moment is outstanding; since the money to repair the ship, Usopp's beaten, Luffy Vs Usopp, the talk with Franky about Klabautermann, CP9 destroying the ship with Usopp's witnessing it, Iceburg trying to make it buoyable, reaching ashore and claiming for more adventures together. It's wonderful, indeed.

Voted Rayleigh's Appearance. I totally didn't expect that. I thought it'd be some random guy who was the coating expert, not the fucking First Mate of the Pirate King.

Sticking with Duval's identity.

Not because it's a very impactful plot twist. It didn't shake the One Piece world to its core like the reveal that Ace is Roger's son. It didn't introduce an epic new character like Raleigh. But this is about "most surprising moment" and like I said before I've never seen the fan base so clueless and misled, and most of all, surprised when the truth was finally revealed.

Kaido's appearance a close second in pure out-of-the-blue-ness.
