I recently saved up enough money to fullfill on of my aspirations: To build my own epic PC!

Here are the specs. I built this about 5 months ago:

800W Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.3GHz
Minor Overclocked up to 3.6ghz
RAM: 12288MB i.e 12GB
Maximus IV Gene-z Motherboard.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB RAM
4GB of total Display Memory (Fully utilizeable thanks to the special z68 chipset on the gene z motherboard)

1TB Western Digital HDD
1TB Western Digital External HDD
2 64GB m4 Solid State Hard drives in a RAID set up.

An average DVD RW
Average keyboard
Cyborg RAT3 Mouse

The motherboard is built for heavy overclocking. I got this one specifically so that i can invest a small amount of money into better cooling systems and just overlock it when games can readily make use of that power.

Total Cost was 1090GBP or about 1500 US dollars.

Also here are the games i have (Wolfwood background!! woo!!!)

I always thought (and I'm still thinking the same) that investing too much money in a computer is not worth it. You can already have a monster tower around 600 euros/dollars.

The only advice I would give to someone who want to build his own computer: Top ATI/NVIDIA graphic card and an ssd drive. Those two elements are what matters for gamers.
