My two cent on file naming
With all the big fancy roles of Edited Manga like translating
proofing, cleaning and typesetting, one might actually think
naming the file is but a formality, something that just needs
to be done, wether you like it or not.
In my time as a Edited Manga reader, I noticed many different kind
of naming schemes all of which revolved pretty much around the
same elements :
a) Serial name : One of the 2 crucial parts of the file name
b) Current chapter : The second important part which is as crucial as the serial name.
c) Volume number : This element is really just optional but it is always nice to have but not always available with mag releases.
d) Group names : The last elemental of the file name, while not all that important is usually always there for the usual credit to the group who scanlated the chapter.
The naming schemes usually shuffle around these elements in usually 2 fashion :
1)Serial_name_volumeNumber_chapterNumber[GroupName]
2)[GroupName]Serial_name_volumeNumber_chapterNumber
usually spaces between words are filled with underscores "_"
example : Kekkaishi_v01_c01[GroupX]
My opinion on those two styles is quite extreme.
Style 1 : Best style possible for every possible reasons
Style 2 : The evil style of death.
Reason as to why :
Let's see it from a leecher's point of view :
(which is usually pretty much everyone who reads this)
You have 50 chapters from one serial with let's say 5 different groups.
You usually like to read the chapters from 1 to 50, but the order is all
screwed because the chapters are sorted first by group names. But let's
take the naming to the stage even before the files are being archived.
The time at which they are downloaded. Don't take me wrong I respect the
groups for their hard work (I know how hard it can sometime be, doing it
myself) but when I start the download of a file that starts with [groupname]
I remove the group name from the file and don't take the time to replace it.
Guess what, Style 1 doesn't have any of those problems, and guess what?
It doesn't take more time to use!
