It's worth pointing out for people who didn't click to read the full story that this is the Diamond Top 500. In other words, this only tracks sales made to comic book shops in the US, not Borders, Barnes and Noble or other places where it's more common for people to buy manga. So it's worth keeping that in mind.

I'm too lazy to type out the rank compared to I'm_Akiyama. I shall post the link for week April 4-10 for it.

I will never understand why Rosario+Panty is so popular with American fans. I know Americans have a weird love for any series with the word 'vampire' in the title...

Kuroshitsuji is doing incredibly well with American fans, 11th week, I know it's very popular in Japan. Didn't expect something like this to be popular in America. I'm the target audience for this, but I don't see any special about this series. I didn't like Vampire Knight either, so yeah...

Shinshi Doumei Cross is doing better then I thought. I guess the detailed artwork is still attractive to the younger fans (I use to love Arina Tanemura, I'm quite 'meh' on her nowadays)

I can't wait to see Hetalia's rank in America, since it's a very popular series with fujoshi/girls in Japan. A Hetalia cosplay (Belarus) was sneaked into a NBC (I think it was) news report on budget cuts for education...:D

No your not, Kuroshitsuji is a shonen manga.

Kuroshitsuji is a shonen manga for girls though. G-Fantasy's target audience is mostly girls that like action but with some nice art to look at. Earl Phantomive's outfits are cute images for girls to be memorized. Guys can read it too but girls are buying the tanks.

^^Then why not just make a shojo magazine featuring action and nice art?, those things are not by any means exclusive to shonen or seinen (they are only a demographics).

"Shonen manga for girls" doesn't make any sense, the whole point of the term shonen is that its made for boys.

Also, girls are the only mostly buying the D-Grayman tanks too, but D-Grayman is still a shonen manga (it means nothing).

Look at D.Gray-Man and Reborn!. Those series are Shonen Jump series, but their fanbase is primarily made of girls. Just because the main audience is female doesn't mean that it's exclusively marketed towards them. I'd personally say that GFantasy series are gender neutral.

Gender neutral is a perfect way to describe G Fantasy. You have the art and characters which is appealing to more to females while you have the action scenes which are directed to the males. Shonen and Shojo aren't always the best way to classify a series but it still has to be placed in a demographic.

because if you forget the "ghastly" and almost unwatchable anime, Rosario + Vampire" it is actually a really good story.

I have loved it since I first came across it and for the record I usually detest anything with the word "Vampire" in it.

GFantasy doesn't specify a demographic. It's not officially marketed to boys or girls. So it is technically neither shonen or shojo. Kuroshitsuji is explicitly for slash fans. Quite a bit of that anthology is aimed at fans of BL pairings.

I only seen few episodes of the anime...so yeah (which was a panty-feast), so please excuse me for my description of it :p. I only watched it for Mizuki Nana anyway, CHURU CHURU PAYAPA ~ Disco lady ~ Disco Lazy ~

Exactly. I remember a while ago, when Nabari no Ou anime was announced. Everyone who disliked BL ran away from it.

GFantasy is just a magazine who isn't afraid to panda to fangirls. And it works, look at how sucessful Kuroshitsuji is (commercially). It also hires more female mangakas then your usual shounen magazine too (I think...). But has GFantasy turned away male fans? I know alot of male fans would dislike a series with any noticable BL understones. I don't care about yuri undertones in mahou shoujos...points at sig

I don't know about Japan but there are plenty of male Kuroshitsuji and Nabari no Ou fans online. I even know some guys who like Zero-Sum comics. Not everyone notices and a good story trumps all, I guess.

@hehey
I just found an article of an interview with the producer of Square Enix.
ANN said:
While he noted that Square Enix is planning a second season of the fujoshi anime Kuroshitsuji, he added that fujoshi is a difficult genre.
I love how the producer actually admits a 'shounen' anime is a 'fujoshi' genre. He is made of win. Sqaure Enix has no shame in milking fujoshis...:eyeroll

This part of the interview is relevant to this thread.
ANN said:
After Fullmetal Alchemist aired, Fullmetal Alchemist and Naruto were among the top-selling comics in America. However, their American sales were about 1/20th to 1/10th the size of their Japanese sales.
Not surprised at all. Even Twilight Graphic Novel only sold 55k (correct me if I'm wrong), and it's pretty darn big in America (or so I heard)

I don't think 55k is that bad (and remember, that was only the first week sales). In 2009, Yen Press sold a grand total of 330,962 graphic novels, so they are definitely on track to beat their entire 2009 revenue with the first volume of the Twilight Graphic Novel alone.

You also have to consider the Eclipse movie coming up, and the hype machine that will accompany it. There's also the second Graphic Novel that should be out by the end of the year.

I'd say that Yen Press is in good shape right about now.
