Shanks had to have been using armament haki to stop Akainu. Also, none of Roger's crew members were caught after disbanding, so Rayleigh isn't special in that regard. The list that we know were members of Roger's crew: Rayleigh, Crocus, Buggy, Shanks. Only Buggy was ever caught, and that was long after leaving Roger's crew. The Navy didn't even know he was a member at first.

Yeah Shanks might be using armament...buti dont see any hardening... wedont know how proficient he is in that...

Shanks and buggies were just kids on board and doctor crocus was on the ship for his own terms(he wanted to search for brook and crew)so not counted ...

it is clear that rayleigh on shabondy did get out in the presence of kizaru,pacifistas and santimaru ... and with kizaru's comment it is clear that they all are wanted man(roger's crew... and remember how things went with Tom.. govt is pretty strict when it comes to someone related to Roger)

The haki "hardening" effect where something turns black is just a visual effect added in recent chapters. There are many many cases in the manga before where people used haki for hardening, but it didn't turn black.

Shanks, Rayleigh, and the admirals are all haki masters, that can't be argued against. Both Shanks and Rayleigh have the King's haki, we don't know about the admirals.

As for who would win? Dunno, they seem to be on par.

Rayleigh said he's getting to old to even think on defeat an admiral. Shanks stops the Fleet Admiral punch with only one arm and didn't even sweat.

Obviously Shanks wins this.

Getting old is not a good enough excuse. Neither Kizaru nor Rayleigh seemed to be that tired from theyre little skirmish. WB was both sick and old and could have easily destroyed Marineford had there not been cheap tactics involved against him. And Akainu back then was not the fleet admiral.

What Shanks did at Marineford cannot be taken factually as a testimony of his strength but a sign of how highly respected he is even among admirals. Ofcourse stopping Akainus punch with one hand and not even looking phased definitely suggests that he is indeed very strong (i know this statement might sound contradictory).

With that said, Shanks and Rayleigh have shown almost the same amount of feats. We dont know theyre individual combat abilities that much to call a definite winner. In my eyes, Rayleigh would win in a very close fight, until i see more of Shanks in actual combat. Not voting though.

Everyone associated with Roger was captured by Marines... but not rayleigh over all this years...

Shanks and Buggy are still running wild lol

We dont even know if Shanks is proficient enough in all forms of haki.. (we are assuming it since he is shown proficient enough in kings haki) .,,, what if shanks is very weak in other forms of haki as compared to Rayleigh ,,, and we know that armament haki is pretty useful in a fight..

We know that he has two forms of Haki that are cannon and neither of them seems to be of a low level. His BH was strong enough to stop a punch from Akainu and also was able to match WBs own imbued BH glaive. Not forgetting his CH which was shown to be quite potent when he got onto WBs ship.

Can I point out Rayleigh made Kizaru bleed. Nobody else did that. Scratchman Apoo vaporised limbs which Kizaru just ignored using his Logia. Marco slammed a beam of light into a building, and Kizaru was unhurt. Kizaru in the war managed to shoot WB full of holes, beat up the first commander, then not try fighting vs Shanks. Just because people didn't fight Shanks doesn't mean he could have beat everyone - Whitebeard never attacked Buggy, despite Buggy wanting to kill him. Shanks never attacked Buggy, despite Buggy hating him. Does that mean Buggy could beat WB or Shanks? If taking out one emperor could have unbalanced the world, taking out two at once - along with killing the son of Gol D. Roger, and capturing two more of his former crew - would definitely have upset it.

The fact is, we've been shown only a bit of how powerful Shanks is. We've also been shown only a bit of how powerful Rayleigh is. Both are Haki beasts who use a sword, both are handicapped in some way (Rayleigh's old, Shanks is 'armless). I say Rayleigh would win, personally - he watch Shanks grow up, and he is an absolute beast.

As has already been mentioned, by the way, the forces of the marines didn't want to fight Shanks + crew, BB + crew, all the WB pirates, Law, Luffy, Jinbe, Crocodile, Boa... It wasn't simply 'Shanks turned up. Everyone else surrendered'...
