Additional Notes:
Re:Monster is a spin-off of the novel, by the same author, of the same title.

Kobayakawa Haruyoshi is also the artist for BlazBlue - Chimelical Complex

Short Summary:
Tomokui Kanata experiences a terrifying dream after a night of drinking. He is stabbed by what appears to be a girl he considers his little sister. Next thing he knows, he awakes from the nightmare only to see an ugly, green old man standing over him. Kanata's body doesn't respond and sleep overpowers him. Maybe it was just a dream? Over the next few days, he realizes that he's been reincarnated as a goblin named Goblin Rou while retaining some memories of his past life. Kanata begins a new life from the perspective of a goblin.

Art
The are narrates the plot well. The layout has been done to present the story that allowed the author to express RPG-esque narrative features. Story-telling in this manner creates a good flow.

There isn't anything that sets Kobayakawa Haruyoshi's artistic talent apart from other artists but there isn't anything that detracts from it either. What I'm trying to say is that Kobayakawa's artwork is what one would expect at such levels and his artwork doesn't have a unique character design like Toriyama Akira, Kishimoto Masashi, Mashima Hiro, Kubo Tite, and etc. Though I will say that his attention to detail is better than other artists such as on toes, toe nails and finger nails.

Going through the eleven chapters that I have read, I noticed that Kobayakawa does not visually overload each scene with detail as compared to those like Oh! Great and others. Kobayakawa has a great sense of utilizing white space, shade and just enough scenery to give the reader a sense of what the immediate environment is like. This is what stands out about Kobayakawa's artistic talent.

Characters:
Goblin Rou/Tomokui Kanata: Murdered but reincarnated as a goblin. He maintains memories from when he was a human but as to how much memories he retains is unknown. Because he retains his human memories, he retains aspects of humanism.

Goblin Kichi: Born of the same generation as Goblin Rou, he is made subservient to Goblin Rou. Goblin Kichi is the first hunting buddy that goes off with Goblin Rou to get their first kill, a horn rabbit.

Goblin Mi: Also born of the same generation s Goblin Rou and Goblin Kichi, Goblin Mi is not anyone special, but when she teams up with Goblin Rou and Goblin Kichi, she quickly becomes an outstanding goblin in her own right.

Goblin Grandpa: A goblin sage who is twenty years old. Goblin Rou comes often to listen to the wisdom that Goblin Grandpa has amassed over his lifetime. Every now and then, Goblin Grandpa likes to head back to the treasure room where he procreates with captive human women.

Impression:
Re:Monster is a very interesting manga in that it presents the perspective of life from a non-human perspective. Kanekiru Kogitsune has done a wonderful job of shedding a different light upon what would otherwise be consider a filthy and crude race of monsters. In order to accomplish this task, Kanekiru Kogitsune combines RPG-esque elements into Re:Monster to describe how the nature of goblins operates.

This is where the world of goblins gets technical and interesting. The nature of goblins is subjected to an evolutionary system composed of different ranks. Each rank is maxed out at level 100. At level 100, a goblin could "rank up" to the next rank, if there is one. (Re:Monster, chp 4, pg 5, 6)

Goblin society isn't complex, but it is brutal. Everyone must provide for themselves. Since goblins become independent on day four, they also start hunting for their own food that day.

As for sexual activities, goblin sexual drive seems high but the rate of conception is low. In order to maintain a healthy goblin population, goblins kidnap human women to copulate with them. Once a goblin has copulated with a human female, they always prefer cohabiting with a human female over a goblin female.

Recommendation:
I would recommend Re:Monster for those who are interested in reading about life from the perspective of goblins.
