Kaneki ended up feeling pressured into fulfilling a role he wasn't necessarily suited for. Who could blame him? Living up to the legacies of such legends would inadvertently affect anyone. But intentional or not, if the cycle is broken this time around then wouldn't that mean the throne has been shattered? The throne of the One Eyed King is to me a symbol of oncoming despair and regurgitation. It's like the virus that the world unleashes to assist it in shedding its skin.

But this time things will be different. Hide is going to make damn well sure that the cycle gets broken. This is probably what Kanou's plan was as well. Kaneki was only the King Piece. There are plenty of other Pawns on the field. That's why he allied himself with so many factions. So that he would be confident in the intervention of powerful, influential parties such as Hide.

The last time the King went berserk, the Washuu simply drove him underground for his own people to deal with. This time thanks to Furuta, the old Washuu order no longer exists to make that cycle continue. That is the only reason that Ghouls and Humans are currently working together. This makes Furuta's statement of keeping his real nature and intentions hidden from V make a lot of sense. If they had known he was essentially a rogue Washuu they would have eliminated him immediately for fear of history repeating itself. Possibly why they chose to let a King that they thought compliant to them live. The 'Washuu' King. So yeah, props to Furuta for basically single handedly breaking the birdcage.
