begs the question how much togashi still wants to go.

I mean, i think we all agree that the opening to the new world arc could as well have been the opening to a completely different manga (with some slightly more exposition of the characters).

Potentially, he could fill 400 chapters with that, but HxH cannot be that long due to his age and......his ...pattern.

Either he is not going to show us the whole world, or humans have actually seen a large stretch of the explorable world already, because they know about the special objects, calamities and so on.

Don freeks obviously has explored one whole side of the whole world. Even if he is 300 years old, that has to mean that the DC is not incredibly much bigger than the stretches the other expeditions have covered (that guy is a single human, to explore a whole side of the DC he needs a lot of time, more than a team of people all exploring different areas).

I think the remaining chaptes of HxH will feature the humans struggle in the DC against the calamities (and i suddenly feel like in the plot of xenoblade x).

What makes you say that? Have you seen how fast advanced hunters run? And have you seen the size of their En usually? If he's just popping around and scanning the environment, moving like 50 mph and it takes him 200+ years to explore half the world he knows of, it's massive.

Secondary point, but Don (:gaw) only explored the eastern SHOREline of lake Mobius

Another point is to do with chronology: Since Journey to the New World, East Edn. was found 300 years ago, does that mean -since 300 years apparently wasn't enough for the second tome to appear- that East necessitated 300 years+ to compile? That would mean that Don (:gaw) is at least around 600 years old!

The name 'dark continent' is a little misleading as it implies it's a single continent out there, while in actuality the known world is basically a collective of rocks in a giant pond, surrounded by land (which would be the dark continent).

For reference
Not necessarily, that just how it looks like in a flat representation. Compare it to what Antarctica looks like in the Mercator projection:

However if the Antarctica was somewhat in the middle of the projection, you would get a similar look to the giant pond surrounded by rocks:

Interestingly, the Red Line continent in One Piece viewed in Mercator projection would look exactly like the New World in Hunter x Hunter:

It's true that we don't know whether translators have enough communication with the author/editors for us to be sure whether tairiku(continent/continents) is meant in the singular or plural, so that stays a possibility... unless there's some clue I missed

Almost the entire planet being covered in continental mass sounds unrealistic and boring

Well, it's not like the entire planet is a landmass. For one the known world is surrounded by this huge lake lol, that's plenty of water imo

Difference being that till now the dark world has been depicted as a giant land mass in which the lake is contained, rather than the lake being a large body of water with more rocks around the known world

what is a mercator tho

Size is huge. It doesn't matter. This planet could even have more huge continents. It could be hosting the worlds of many manga and anime.
