After the introduction of Spy x Family in round 1, it's time to take a closer look, because the story is more about a strange family and their weird adventures. Let's dive in two important themes that make the series a must-read.
Themes of Spy x Family
The series tells a story about family. What does it mean to have a family, what is it's importance? What value does a family have to you, and what does it have value does it have to those around you?
In this theme, Anya is most likely the character that expresses her longing to a family the most. Spending her first years on this planet as an orphan, she's desperate to keep the family she has finally found together. She will do anything in her power to make sure this family doesn't break apart - even if this means reading Yor and Loids' minds about their expectations of her (and their own intentions...).
Whether it's getting into a prestigious Academy, getting good grades of befriending someone she doesn't exactly like. It's for the greater good, which is keeping her family together and happy.
And perhaps that's something we can see in Yor as well. She joined married Loid for her own, different, reasons, being married makes her life a lot easier. But she too grew up without parents, it was just her younger brother and herself. She does her best to adapt the role of a doting mother, even though she does that in her own quirky ways.
And Loid? Loid is a man surrouned by mystery, fitting for a spy. He tries his best not to get too attached.
Lastly, they have their dog. And doesn't the dog, such a big, fluffly and smart dog deserve (and need) a happy family?
What does it mean to constantly have to lie about your life to others? When is the right time to tell the truth, rather than cover it up? Is telling the best thing to do? Especially when it comes to those close to you, how long are you going to keep this up?
Within the family, all three members, actually four if we include the dog, are special in their own way.
Yet it's that part that they have to hide for the world - and their family - to see.
Anya can read everyones thoughts, which makes her carry all the secrets within their family, even the ones that aren't hers. How will the world react if the truth came out about her abilities? Loid is on a mission of extreme importance, one that can possibly prevent a war from happening. He constantly lives a double life, posing as a psychiatrist to the world. But what will happen if he slips up?
Perhaps the most dangerous one of their family is Yor, a deadly assassin who is highly skilled in her trade. But maybe not so skilled in real life. How long is she going to be able to hide this?
In other words, if you aren't reading this manga yet, what are you waiting for?
