Discussion Tools for Learning Japanese and Translation

Anyone know any OCR (optical character recognition) software that works with Japanese? I'm too lazy to manually type stuff in for translations, but if I had a program that could just take in the images and spit out the japanese in text I'd definitely use it.

All the stuff I've seen so far is really expensive, anyone know of some free stuff? Or know where to find the expensive stuff for free? Winny/Share gurus, I'm looking at you.

called SmartOCR Lite Edition, which I'd like to pass on to everyone in the

It looks like the developer is no longer in business, but the freeware
program is still available (for the time being) from the above site. I
understand, it's designed for Windows XP SP2 or later and needs Microsoft
.Net Framework v.1.1. I've used it on a PC under these conditions and can
vouch for it working. Results are まちまち (I've had excellent and horrible
results), but it has a learning function that might improve reading after
time. I read one comment on the Web that version 106 is better than 107, but
I haven't found that difference yet myself.

Hello to all
I was thinking that I might want to try Editing a series by myself and I was wondering if translators and Manga Editors had any specific online resources for learning Japanese and good editing techniques/programs?

Maybe something that other people who do both have used?

I wasn't sure where to post this, but I'll try here since I'm sure others have learned the language somehow. I have one of my state's better community colleges, a pretty big Japanese culture center, Japanese study centers, and then there's Rosetta Stone.
So far I only know a little in which I'm too shy to share here.

Resources for learning japanese and translating for learning purposes. Any other suggestions?

Hey, I've been learning japanese and I have a few very useful resources to share for those at a variety of stages of learning, and would like to know if there are any other good resources.

First of all, the useful resources:
wakan, http://wakan.manga.cz/ -
a free learning tool (in development) that contains a dictionary and a functional "translator" that can help attach meanings to each word in a sentence with good accuracy. Not good for learning kanji if you aren't trying to (the translator and dictionary are a little too good). It does have a vocabulary section for those who are trying to learn kanji. it's translator is a great way to pick up on the grammatical usage of the japanese language and gain a bit of vocabulary by translating various japanese content (blog posts and manga raws). uses edict, but occasionally needs google translate for less formal phrases. Does provide kanji, their meaning, and a whole character table (with radical lookup).

realkana, http://realkana.com - a great site for practicing kana, you can practice with a variety of fonts that simulate varying quality of writing, including horridly malformed, but somewhat legible.

google/microsoft IME pad, good for identifying the simpler kanji so you can look them up.

and most of all, writing down the kana and quizzing yourself on them (some like flashcards for this purpose)


I haven't really found many good sites for learning kanji, so any recommendations would be appreciated, but I'm open to any useful resources for learning japanese. I'm going through a raw scan of bleach with wakan to gain an understanding of grammar and pick up on vocabulary. I'm also reading "japanese in mangaland" and doing the work book to learn some.

I have thankfully noticed that after about 3 months of starting japanese learning, I am starting to pick up on the meanings of simpler japanese sentences without a dictionary. Please note that I had looked extensively into grammar and kana beforehand.

Anyways, thanks in advance for your recommendations and I hope that you find wakan useful.

People who are having trouble with unknown kanji

Hi Guys,

I am sure many of you guys know this already but for the ones who don't....

Before when I was translating unknown kanji I used this program, http://tangorin.com/multiradical/ It took me sometimes hours. However recently I found a much more simpler one where you can draw the kanji with your mouse. It comes with Japanese IME kit, and is called IME pad. Here is a guide. http://www.wfu.edu/~yipcw/atg/ime/boxed-input.html.
It is very useful. If you don't have it already you can get it from here. http://www.declan-software.com/japanese_ime/

For those who is wondering which IME that she is talking about, it is Microsoft IME. Restore the language bar, then you will see IME パッド(pad).　If you are using google Japanese Input, you may want to use "Handwriting" function under Tools.
