General Overview: In the world where the taste and texture of food are very important, there is Toriko, a hunter of precious foods regularly hired by restaurants and the rich. He's a man with the inhuman skills necessary to capture the ferocious, evasive, and rare animals to complete his ultimate dinner course! His current accomplice is a weak, timid person who was inspired by Toriko's greatness and accompanies him on all his journeys on his quest for the course of his life.

Category Ratings: (1-10 scale)

Art:8
This work, reimagines the old art style of the action mangas. It may need some getting used to but with Shimabukuro's weird ideas it works wonders. When this art style truely comes to life is, in fights and the all important food. It should be noted that a cooking manga can not be truly called great when the readers doesn't feel the desire the food in question.

What may be the only dispute to the art, depending on the reader, is the proportions. This manga doesn't have normal in its vocabulary. It is not a big predicament and those weird proportions do work in favor of the overall art.

Plot:7

This is an action manga first and cooking second. Its inception came from the titular character Toriko and his fights with different enemies and creatures in order to find unique ingredients to cook with. That is much more in evidence on the first few volumes, as the fights takes precedence. After that the plot shifts a little more towards the cooking aspect and works in tandem with the action. After a while reader will think the cooking is as much a battle in this manga as the fights.

Characters:8

Development of the characters are the real headache in this piece. As the namesake, Toriko started of as being the all-powerful. However after the inital chapters that started to change and he had to get downgraded to make room for improvements. That is still an issue, though that should not deter anyone.

Other main character; Komatsu the Chef on the other hand had a very good learning curve. When Toriko seemed all-powerful he was weak and took in the experiences whole heartedly. After a while his inate talent has been slowly but firmly opened up and he, despite some irritating quirks he still displays from the start is a stand-alone character. It also behooves me to say, those quirks make a characters uniquesness and even they may get on your nerves they still are part of what makes Komatsu who he is.

A little note to the supporting cast is needed. they have been created to affect the progression and not for making the page appear full. Villains do offer some interesting contrasts, even between themselves. This same is true for the allies of the main duo. Every character have their own personalities which is the most important.

Theme:
Well i can't say this manga has a theme but will think on it..

Originality:6

I can't say this manga is the pinnacle of originality in good conscience. Some of the storylines do resemble other mangas and games even ones in the same magazine. While it is true the author gives his own spin to them, that is still an issue. Additionally, the usage of fantastic food isn't created with this manga.

Although on its side is the usage of reader submitted ideas to create diversity.

Overall: 8

One of the hits of the market today, this one will make veteran manga readers remember the old days with its art and at the same time new fans will see a unique style. In conjucture the mangaka should be congratulated for sticking to his guns, rather than use quick fixes to gain popularity. Has good story, above average humour and interesting characters as its pros. This manga is a very good example of the transition from cult to mainstream.
