Discussion Would You Let Someone Borrow Your Car?

So I have a roommate who wanted to travel a state away to see family. He would be gone for a week and instead of renting a car I was almost like you could take my car. however, I got to thinking and wondered if its standard practice to do that. It got me feeling a bit uncomfortable since I wouldnt be with the car for awhile and what would happen if they got into an accident or damaged it.

I would never let anyone drive my 71 Dodge Charger. Only an idiot would let someone drive their classic car o_o

Well, rationally speaking assuming there is proper insurance involved that will cover anything that could happen during the trip and that he is a mostly responsible guy who will take responsibility for just about anything that could happen (including cleaning it depending on what happens, new dents or scratches and gas cost) then there is no reason to not lend it as the car wouldn't be exposed to risks its not exposed to with you and you can presumably do without the car for that time.

That said, its still really hard to actually go through with this. I don't think I would be comfortable even asking for a car... I guess being coherent can be entirely different from being logical lol.

yeah i agree. i regard my car to be a very personal thing to me though, i'm not comfortable with lending it out at all - this is how i feel at least.

I let my brother borrow my car this year and hehe he wrecked it.
Got in accident but not totaled it.

It depends, but I likely wouldn't. Don't trust people, and my car's brake isn't 100%. Charles did let me drive his car though.
Your brother sucks at driving though, for the most part.

He was hit from behind after taking my car out to go somewhere (gave him the green light to do so).
The other party's insurance paid for everything. Its all good.

Trust is where this is going. It is simple, how much do I need this vehicle right now vs how much worth the person has to me? So yes some people ask at the right time and I have been able to lend out my car. But never for more than an hour or so. Besides my gf.

I would not let anyone drive my 2001 Honda Accord despite that it's a super old car and can break anytime. I'm fine if its my siblings or my parents, considering, they bought it and it was passed down. But if it's friends or acquaintances/neighbors, no just no. My car. My responsibilities.

If I had a car I would borrow it only to the person which I can totally trust. It can be my good friena or relative but never someone like a simple roommate. Because yes, everything can happen on the road and who will pay for the repair in case of accident?

Depends on your country's regulation, cars may need to have proper registration and insurance coverage before they can be used.

I'm not bothered with who the driver is, as long as he/she is part of the registration, who is my family anyway.

Hmmm... I don't think we have ever driven each other's car before.
