The old guy seems sincere in his belief. I didn't get the feeling he was trying to troll. I heard he or his movement spent quite a lot of money on advertisement. Maybe its because he is an old guy but I'm having a hard time blaming him for it.

Fortunately for me, I'm not a follower. :P

The fact is, people are selfish enough to believe it. They may think the guy's spouting crap, but they don't want to risk him being true and missing out on heaven, so they'll listen to him. Many debates I've come across regarding religion, I've heard "better to be right and go to heaven than be wrong and go to hell," which seriously in my opinion applies here. I also heard how some were committing suicide because they thought they had no chance in hell (lulz) to go to heaven or something... not sure on this, actually, so ignore it.

You can, in my opinion, see just how selfish people are by seeing how they react to BS guesses this guy makes. Otherwise, I doubt anyone would listen to this guy if they weren't that intent on going to heaven or cared much.
