Kaotic Korner - Translation Basics

  • 779

How is it going, this is Kaoz with another edition of Kaotic Korner. Today I want to give you a very basic overview over different translation strategies. For this purpose, we are primarily going to look at "word-for-word translations", "literal translations" and "free translations", so let's jump right in.

Word-for-word translations
We will start off with the most straight-forward type. Translating word-for-word is exactly what it sounds like: you substitute every word in your source text with a different one from the target language without touching anything else. So for instance you could have a translation like this:

Source: Je te pardonne.
Translation: I you forgive.

As you can probably imagine, this can go very wrong very quickly. I only used a simple three word sentence and it's already messed up. Imagine doing that with more complex structures and you probably won't have an easy time understanding what's being said anymore. Nevertheless, until a few...

Golden Week

Golden Week is upon us again. Most of you might have read this term before, others are utterly unaware of its existence. But what is this dreadful thing that gives us a manga free week in late April / early May?
The Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク Gōruden Wīku) is a chain of holidays, forming one of the peaks of the Japanese holiday schedule next to August's O-Bon and New Year. In recent years there has also been talk of a Silver Week in September. The single holidays, forming what we know as Golden Week, are Shōwa Day (昭和の日 Shōwa no Hi) on April 29, Constitution Memorial Day (憲法記念日 Kenpō Kinenbi) on May 3, Greenery Day (みどりの日 Midori no Hi) on May 4 and Children's Day (こどもの日 Kodomo no Hi) on May 5.

As you see, the cause of celebration varies wildly. While Shōwa Day is held in honor of the late Emperor Hirohito, Constition Memorial Day reminds the Japanese of the constitutions proclamation in 1947. Greenery Day, formerly...

Japanese publisher Kadokawa has purchased a 51% stake in Yen Press.

Sword Art Online, A Certain Magical Index, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Many of us are familiar with those Anime which all originated from the same kind of source. A Light Novel.
But what are those things in the first place and why are the news at the top even remotely interesting?

Light novels, or ranobe, are fairly popular in the homeland of Otaku culture. They are novels whose main target audience consists of middle and high school kids in the same sense as a Manga magazine like Shounen Jump does.
Like a novel should be, ranobe are basically 99% text paired with a few illustrations and are released in bunkobon size.

Many fans of LNs in the western world are now rejoicing because Yen Press became a part of the japanese company Kadokawa. During the last few years, Yen Press already began to license and publish quite a few series like Haruhi, SAO, Accel...

MangaHelpers Becomes ComicHelpers

Hey all,

Times are changing and so is MangaHelpers. Due to the surge of popularity of Western comics and the waning interest in manga, we have determined that we, too, must change to remain relevant moving forward. As such, we will slowly transition to a discussion site for comics starting today.

We apologize to the members that enjoyed discussing on MangaHelpers these past nine years; thank you very much for your support during that time and we hope you can understand and respect our decision. We also hope that many of you stick around and join us in debating about Batman and Superman. In fact, why not join right in? Get started here and discover the world of ComicHelpers!

Sincerely,

Manga Sections Are Back

Ladies and gentlemen,

when you visited the site earlier, you probably noticed that the Manga section was gone and replaced by a Comics section. And upon checking our homepage an announcement that we would turn MangaHelpers into ComicHelpers. Now, some of you managed to see through our clever ruse, however, to everyone else: we tricked you. Of course we would never do something like replacing all the manga discussions with comic ones. So rejoice, everyone, and welcome back to...

...Wait...

Happy April 1st,
~MangaHelpers Staff

P.S. You can still discuss comics here.
P.P.S. Remember to do your taxes.
