The graphic novel market is still small. Watch: over the next couple of years more and more money will go into promotion. The teen/young adult market is huge, quite a lot of manga is targeted to that age group. If VIZ has it's way seinen will cut into the American graphic novel market, which is predominantly older readers. Sink some actual money into promotion, partner with a book store and it could happen. As for the recent article about manga sales going down the last two years: all of retail slumped. Worst economic down turn since the depression will do that. Sales will rebound as retail rebounds.

Well the fact that so many were on the list is impressive. Especially considering how many are being released at a time right now (5 a month for those who don't know). When VIZ gets back to putting out one at a time, you can probably bet that it will hang around on the list a bit longer.

Glad to see Rinne up there. I hope this means the whole same day release thing is working out for Viz. Maybe it would encourage them to do the same with other series. Plus, I like Rinne so there's also that .

Oh, and from looking at the covers (as I haven't read most of the manga on these lists) I notice American's seem to be into the whole bishounen character design (well with a few exceptions *cough* One Piece *cough*). It's kind of weird when I'm looking at the covers and see all these serious looking "pretty" characters and then you see a cover with a guy who's a skeleton and has an afro .

Last week was basically shonen hell, with VIZ Shonen Jump titles dominating the list. Hetalia taking the top spot in it's first week is heartening. Even if not my taste it is nice seeing something different sell well. Dogs becoming a chart fixture is also nice to see.

I'm amused that Hetalia is placed under "seinen". Old news is old, but I'm really happy to see that Bakuman has been licensed.

As a whole, it's definitely interesting to see the difference between Japanese and Western tastes.

lol. There was a mistaken report, a while back, that a print version would be serialized in Comic Birz, which I found quite amusing. Considering how little demographic has to do with content it would not have been surprising if true. Technically it's a webcomic and demographic doesn't apply.

Ah, right! Hetalia originated as a webcomic.

My reaction rate is slow so the fact that it got licensed in the first place now comes as a shock to me. LOL
