Re: The Games Hangout Thread - Part 1

Yeah that was indeed nasty...especially with not even letting him gather his personal belongings and getting thrown out by bodyguards....I was like :gwah...from my experience though, I would like to hear both versions of the story, if we ever get to details, cuz I doubt that Desilets was an innocent fairy...
That could be very true. That his employment termination and project holding could be logically justifiable, but Ubisoft doesn’t exactly have the cleanest track record. Here’s hoping more information will pass through the grape vine soon.

I’m not much of a MGS fan, but this is a great deal. The art book alone, which covers all four games, is worth the price. I collect art books from titles I enjoy, and typically, they’re difficult to obtain and/or expensive. So this is really awesome. :B

Nintendo has decided to make headlines this week because they hate free advertising or something. They’re aiming to collect all Youtube ad revenue from Let’s Players or Game Reviewers who cover Nintendo titles. I happen to follow several Youtubers, who have already stated they will no longer feature Nintendo games on their channels.

I know they’re differentiating arguments concerning this matter, but personally, I have purchased games due to watching a Youtube playthough and/or review, that I otherwise wouldn’t have spent the cash on. There’s a well written article on Penny Arcade over this matter: click.

Also, EA is apparently making a MOBA by the name of Dawngate. Not much is known about it besides EA claiming it’ll be a whole new “experience” to MOBA game-play. Personally, I think EA is a little too late to this party with beasts like LoL, HoN, and DOTA grasping their tendrils around this type of market. But who know!? Maybe it'll be a hit, and maybe I’ll actually not suck at this MOBA, unlike the others... :sweatdrop

Re: The Games Hangout Thread - Part 1

We were talking about the console with some people in skype... so not special.

And the desing? It's a freaking box, really!

I really liked how fast the system operated when he gave order through his voice... but yeah nothing special (except the fact that Gears of War wasn't mentioned at all)

I also like to add that it won't be backward compatible so you can't play any Xbox 360 games.

The idea of not allowing used games doesn't bode well.

LOL Microsoft's stocks dropped while Sony's stocks jumped after the announcement of XBox One. I guess investors aren't happy either.

And more Xbox One news: apparently if you want to play the same game disc on another Xbox One account, you have to pay a fee. What is Microsoft thinking!? :fail

I'm not either. It brings little to the table. Though I'm interested to see what the system's launch titles will be.

Design wise, it looks ugly as sin. Like a bulky DVD/VHS player from 2003.

Also, development for the MMO Guild Wars (the original) is no more. I wonder how long until ArenaNet shuts those servers down?

Re: The Games Hangout Thread - Part 1

It's never good when you reveal your console and your competition's stock value shoots up 9%.

And some further clarification has been made to the always online rumors. Many of these stemming from Xbox One focus on Cloud computing. Which is something that does require an internet connection to work. So if a game were ever to rely on that an internet connection would more than likely be a requirement to play that game.

^It seems like the "always-on" option is optional for game developers so some may require it.

Yeah, and it could even be used outside of that if developers used it to boost game performance. So a game could work with or without it. So it's definitely not as restrictive as some feared.

The used gaming thing is going to be a problem for Microsoft though. That pretty much seemed to have been exactly what people thought it was. I'm stunned they actually did that. That is going to be a huge disadvantage.

Yeah, that is what really turning people off. Microsoft really needs to remedy it if they want to get more customers.

Could someone explain more about the "used games" point?

Essentially games are linked to accounts on the Xbox One. So you can't resell the hard copy of your game or even give it to somebody without them having to pay an undisclosed fee to microsoft for a reinstall on a new account. The same is apparently true of renting.

But Microsoft seems to be rapidly backing down from this so who knows how it will ultimately turn out.

Re: The Games Hangout Thread - Part 1

Some clarifications: the Xbox One can play used games. Microsoft said that they will provide more information about this tidbit later. However you can sell your used Xbox One games online.

The issue about paying a fee if you play a game on another account is clarified as well. The example they used is if you go over to a friend's house:

But what if you want to bring a game disc to a friend's house and play there? You'll have to pay a fee—and not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that game—in order to use a game's code on a friend's account. Think of it like a new game, Harrison said.

"The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One," he [Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison] said. "They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live."

"They would be paying the same price we paid, or less?" we asked.

"Let’s assume it’s a new game, so the answer is yes, it will be the same price," Harrison said.
Update - Microsoft's Larry Hryb has issued the following clarification:

Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile.

Re: The Games Hangout Thread - Part 1

Those explanations don't make it look even a tiny speck of a dust particle better. For fucks sake, of course I will be able to play my games on a different console with my own profile where I have registered the game to.-_- How else would I be able to play my games once the console is dead?!

Issues:
"Confirmed" Issues:
- Forced online activation for all games
- Massive emphasis on TV, services and non game related focus
- Live TV services available in US only at launch, requires separate device
- No headset included
- Over emphasis on Kinect interface
- Xbox One not being backwards compatible with the 360 games or accessories.
- Microsoft's failed attempts to correct PR with contradicting FAQ's, vague responses, misinformation.

Hardware:
- DDR3 confirmed instead of GDDR5
- Potentially Only 5GB of the 8GB ram available for games
- Only HDMI for output.
- 3 OS's? At best, confusing, at worst, a nightmare.
- Kinect needed to be plugged in for Xbox One to function
- Non-replaceable Hard Drive (though not as much an issue, as external drives are supported similar to other consoles)

Problems with the announcement itself:
- EA games prerendered using in game assets
- COD looked less than stellar
- Quantum break reveal was confusing

Yesterday was a desaster for MS and it should be, because that's not what the majority of consumers wanted, not by a loooooooooooong mile.
