I actually agree with the rest of your post, but this part, HEAVILY disagree. His father isn't from a special clan, so you can't say he gained anything from that side of the family. His mother was from the Uzumaki Clan, who's only gift was unnaturally large reserves of chakra. That doesn't exactly amount to anything if you can't use it properly. It's the same as with Ichigo in Bleach, more reiatsu than anyone in the show and he still isn't a top tier fighter.
The only thing Naruto ever got handed to him was Asura's abilities. Which happened so late into the game I don't think it should even be that much of a deciding factor when it comes to looking at the series as a whole.
Minato may not be from the big clan but he was considered as one of a few self made true prodigy (other was itachi) who comes once in a lifetime.Even sasuke had to train with orochimaru and had to access the cursed mark to become strong. He was a hype. And his mother was from the uzumaki clan who were direct relatives of senju clan and were direct descendants of asura, so yeah naruto did have special genes, why do you think he was able to learn perfect senjutsu when even jiraiya who had far more k=experience couldn't master.

, I know Berserk is a masterpiece, I know Naruto has big flaws. I know things Im going to mention are not that simple, I know Miura is a genius... But Im a woman, and whatever plot reasons, characterisation and so., and even if Berserk is a flawless manga or anything, sorry i just can't give my vote to a manga that portrays a woman being raped with such a lewd expression.

There's no excuse i can accept to this, unfortunately, its quite common now in many media to display rape as a "pleasant experience" for women when its supposed to be the utmost humiliation, I know its arguable in casca case, but still there's no doubt about her feelings when you see her face. Again Im not at all a feminist or anything like this, im not bashing Berserk or Berserk fans for this, and im not saying Berserk is bad because of this, its just my personnal opinion on this specific part of the story which makes me uneasy.

I have heard quite a few people complain about how women are treated in Berserk and I can understand why, so I do respect your opinion :)
But I am just wondering, have you read Berserk? Do you know the context in which this rape is taking place? Do you know who the man who is raping her is? And do you know what comes after this rape scene for her? Or are you just basing your opinion on this page?

The Uchiha were taken out within the course of a single night.

Sure, there were strong Uchiha in the village, who would have been harder to kill, but the majority were probably children, the elderly, and people who weren't mission-experienced expert battle-hardened ninja.

Also, look how long it took for the Sand village attack to get cleaned up. It is likely that they brought some of their strongest ninjas to that fight (they brought Gaara, their only jinchurichi, ffs) and it was over in an afternoon.

The Uchiha would have been having to fight every clan within Konohagakure.

Best I could see them doing would be a tactical retreat.

Firstly, the leaders in Konoha knew what the Uchiha were plotting (due to Itachi) and were always knew their plans 1 step ahead of them.

Secondly, the Uchiha probably understood that there was no way they could trust any of the other countries.

Also, they probably wondered what the point in trying to brutally overthrow one leader, to sell yourselves into subservience to another, would be.

Danzo's actions were pure plot convenience – they don't impact on the integrity [in a narrative sense] of his overall character at all, in my opinion.

He had to act like an idiot, otherwise Kishimoto wouldn't have had an even harder way of pushing that plot twist into the story.

Someone who wants to train smart, effective, ninjas.

Someone who is asking a 13 year old boy to kill his family (and trusts him to do as much).

It appears that in the Naruto world, children grow up fast. They are given much greater responsibility at a much younger age.

Of course they would trust the opinion of a Uchiha, when they are trying to plan out a horrific genocide on the Uchiha – through the use of that said Uchiha.
He knows his clan best.

He knows how they think, what they are likely to do, what they desire, who they are, better than anyone else.

Asking someone to leak information about their family and asking them to brutalize their family are 2 different things.

Well, Hiruzen, the defacto leader, certainly did discuss with Itachi.

And about the logic of doing so, I guess here is another place where we are in disagreement.

He was duped into murdering his girlfriend, his friends and family.

You said
I was arguing against that.

His ineffectual nature meant that it isn't possible to say what he was thinking.
Had he wanted to, arresting Danzo would have been possible, as would arresting the Uchiha leaders.

I think I have dealt with the fact that I don't believe that would be the only method to stop a civil war.

As for 'saving his younger brother' – he knew he couldn't trust Danzo in this either. He'd have been better taking Sasuke with him and mind-fucking him into thinking something else happened (thus having to flee), had he really wanted to ensure Sasuke's safety from Danzo.

There are many things he could have done.

Hell, he could have told the Uchiha who were living happily in the city and the regular civilians about the plot. He could have forced the Uchiha leader's (and Danzo's) hand for them – it is likely that not all the Uchiha would suddenly take up arms.
The third would have been able to get ANBU/ninja there ready (had Itachi prewarned him).
The fight might happen, but it would have been brief, the Uchiha could have been captured alive (there are numerous techniques shown in the series to do as much), tried – fairly, and the rest of the Uchiha would have seen justice prevail.

That's just one potential way the whole shitty event could have been stopped, which wouldn't make Itachi appear such a contemptible character.

If you really see nothing wrong with what happened, then I am not sure we will ever be able to reach an accord.
There were only few superior uchichas to begin with. Shisui was dead already, whereas obito helped itachi in finishing off police station. The strongest uchicha was sasuke and itachi's father who had refused to fght with itachi and was accepting his death. On top of that it was an operation that happened in night a type of operation thaat itachi specialised in .And lastly itachi was himslef a prodigy who probably at 13 was stronger than most of the jonins of his village. If you take all these points then uchich massacre in one night is not that far fetched.

Id argue Tobi was living up to everything right up until he was revealed to be Obito and his reasoning was given to us for what he was doing. He was efficiently playing the entire series and bending it to his whim, like a good villain should do but then was revealed to be nothing short of a winy kid who decided to destroy the world cause he lost his crush. Nagato as a character was very deep. I dont actually think the war orphan turning into a twisted but methodical main villain is a trope that has been explored all that much, and I've read a fair few manga at this point. Regardless he went to shit as well.

Some other characters worth noting that aren't binded by any particular trope would be Danzo, Kisame and of course Itachi. All of whom stayed fairly consistent till the end and are definitely highlights of the series. That said, a lot of characters in Naruto were wasted as @Aizen pointed out. While it does have some excellent characters, pound-for-pound it suffers like many shonen do from an inflated cast.

Berserk handles its cast far better. Even the characters you are meant to despise get sufficient characterization that makes them feel more real (like the incest pedophile king). It overall wastes very few characters. Of course Guts and Griffith are far superior to any character and/or character dynamic Naruto has to offer. Its how a rivalry should be done, Narutos rivalry with Sasuke went to shit fairly early on into the series and it didn't help that neither were likeable or particularly well written characters unlike Guts and Griffith.

There is also the lore aspect. Berserks lore is probably the most intriguing I've seen in any series, Naruto tries way too hard with its lore. Its all over the place. Too many inconsistencies. The plot kinda ties into the lore so its pretty much the same there. The art is of course leagues better in Berserk, which arguably has the best art of any series I've read sans Vagabond.

Themes also go to Berserk. Naruto does tackle some good ones and Id argue is the deepest of the Big 3, but Berserk is one of the deepest manga period. The topics that it touches on are risky but reward the reader with great payoff. Lastly, the world building in Berserk (not quite the same as lore for me) is also astounding, making every new location they visit feel real (in no small part thanks to the vibrant and detailed art) and necessary. Naruto had potential for good world building, but failed greatly by dumping all the countries on us simultaneously in the Summit Arc (at which point I think it was clear kishimoto lost his sense of direction with the series).

Naruto as a series is a 7/10. Berserk is a 10/10 (if we ignore decimals).
One thing about naruto series I liked the most was the foreshadowing. Everything was foreshadowed from the start except for kaguya part, so no one can complain that the author had to bring in new story line, it was like kishimoto had thought about full story right from the start except for naruto meeting minato part which he deicided later on (even that was logical and not an asspull way for naruto to control his transformation against pain).

It happened - I am not sure what your point is...

Anyway, as I said above, it kinda is getting a bit off topic anyway.

You guys can feel free to discuss - but I am gonna probably step back from it now (I think we have all said our peace anyway).

Naruto beating Tokyo Ghoul was a shame, but if it manages to beat Berserk this will be a tragedy. :emocat
I mean I think that, at this point, only Berserk is a worthy rival for FMA, Naruto is a good manga but still very faulty in many aspects.

Props to @Emperor Spriggan though, he's campaigning with all his soul. :shakefist

I, like others, respect your opinion on this Erin, but I actually strongly disagree with the notion that Casca enjoyed this. This is something I hear from the fandom here or there and it is simply not true.
By this point Casca had watched her comrades be torn apart and eaten by demons, she was very confused and had been knocked out. Then while she is being raped, the man she loves has to sit there and watch (Guts). After this, she is so traumatized by the experience, that she literally forgets everything, and a huge plot point in the series is Guts trying to help her and himself through that. This situation is infamous because it is supposed to convey a sense of helplessness to the reader. We have to sit there and watch this like Guts has to, and for that it is divisive. It in no way condones rape, in fact, it shows the effects something as traumatic as what happens in the Eclipse can have on two people.
I definitely get as @MArGi said why people have issues with the treatment of women in berserk. It is a dark fantasy and like Game of Thrones or others like it, the tone is not very kind to them at points. However, beyond the surface, Berserk actually has a fair few well developed and capable female characters. It certainly does not make them out to be useless, or only for fanservice. Quite a few play key roles in the story.

Aye, as much as I may disagree with him and @The President, they certainly are putting in the effort.

Far better to read a wall of text which you disagree with, than a one liner which just reads along the lines of 'I think Berserk/Naruto is best'.

2.0. Effects of War
Orphans, Poverty and Battlegrounds

I couldn't tackle everything in my war theme in yesterday's post, so I decided to break it down into two segments, this being the second and last part of the theme. The point has been addresed by a few people in this thread, but why not delve into it more in depth:p
Like with the other two posts, I'm going to touch on a small group of individuals who I feel capture this theme properly:
Nagato, Yahiko and Konan

Like Team 10 and Team Gai, this is one of the the teams in this series which I feel Kishimoto fleshed out beautifully, the icing on top being that fact they they aren't from Konoha. You will recognize Konan from the Akatsuki post I made in the prevous round, but the true juice of this post lies in the other two members, Yahiko and Nagato. These 2 honestly have one of the best friendships in the series:

These 3 are from the land of Rain (Amegakure), a village that isn't part of the Five Great Nations. It was introduced to us once Jiraiya left Konoha going to look for the Akatsuki leader, who he received information was located from. From the first mention of the name, you'd think it was just another small location out of the reach of the other Five Nations such as the Waterfall Village (Where the Jinchuuriki Fuu is from),but, think again. The place is a war torn battlefield:
The Five Nations obviously need somewhere to wage war, and invading the other nations is of course a lot of effort, and there are many factors involved that make this a risky venture. Why not turn a little known residence into a war zone then? I mean, no one else will care, right?
Which leads to stuff like:

Nagato losing his parents, and becoming an orphan. He was a normal resident of the village, who had the benefit of being away from the heavy battle areas. Until Konoha shinobi showed up to his home one day, killing his parents, which caused the activation of his Rinnegan for the first time.
Now rendered an orphan, and with nowhere to go, he decides on becoming a wanderer, where he finds two other orphans like him, Konan and Yahiko.

Also orphans like him, the three start living on their own, Yahiko resorting to stealing food from other people in order to make a living. Until one day, Jiraiya, along with the other two Sannin run into them. They were part of Konoha's forces that had been sent into the rain during the advent of the Third Shinobi World War (Surprised?), and having come from fighting Hanzo, the leader of Amegakure, they spot the three orphans. Orochimaru suggests killing them to put them out of their misery. Jiraiya decides against this, and says he'll take the three orphans under his wing. Discovering Nagato has the Rinnegan later on, this reinforces his decision, and he realizes the boy might be the Child of Prophecy:
He trains them in ninjutsu, up to the point where they can defend themselves appropriately since he isnt intending to stay there forever, and once Jiraiya leaves, they decide to make an organization to try and achieve peace within the Rain Village. Which was known as, the Akatsuki :hip Yep, our favorite group of villains started from here :p
But of course, in a world like this, you don't expect things like this to last long. Due to an alliance between Hanzo and Danzo (:heh), they both plot to take down the Akatsuki, fearing that over time, Yahiko would become an Usurper and more well renown than Hanzo as the leader of the Rain Village. The result?

Yahiko’s death drives Nagato into an unbalanced state. That’s two sources to his pain, the first one being his parents’ death. What do both sources have in common? They involved Konoha soldiers.
With each panel you can almost see the fluctuating pain in Nagato’s face. Soon after Yahiko died, Hanzo sends Amegakure and Konoha soldiers to kill Nagato. Turns out he was lying the whole time and planned to kill them whether Yahiko died or not.
This is what a single person in this village went through. Now imagine what the others go through, being residents of the same place. Of course though, everything wasn't a loss. We did get this panel from this chain of events after Pain dropped a devastating one liner that would make the best WWE smack talker jealous.:hip
Which quite honestly, might have been the most EPIC exchange of words in this series. This is why this guy will forever be my favorite Naruto villain.

And that's it for the theme of 'War'. I wonder, will there be more to come? ;)

Thing is, pleasure is pleasure. A women might mentally despise whats going on (which is clearly the case here), but the body often acts independent of the mind. Same thing with men. I really dont want to go into the logistics of "bodily pleasure" here so I'll leave it at that.

Berserk treats its female cast far better then Naruto does, seeing as how in Naruto they are more or less all mentally weak and play little part in the story (some exceptions like Tsunade and Konan, sure). Casca is a fully realized fleshed out character that plays a major part in the story. If your looking for women in a story that are treated right, then Berserk is for you. That is unless you dont like the graphic content.

One thing about naruto series I liked the most was the foreshadowing. Yeah, but same thing goes for most series. Those that dont are usually the series that are poorly written (like FT). I do agree though that, while I disliked Tobi being Obito, he did lay out a shit ton of evidence for it over the course of the series. But Kishimoto really likes wasting his good writing potential with terrible payoff.

You guys can feel free to discuss - but I am gonna probably step back from it now (I think we have all said our peace anyway).
We will leave it at that then, agree to disagree.

Why would you find so the scene so problematic if it is in no way portrayed as consensual, titling or meant to come off as nothing but horror and a terrible thing?

There is a lot of sexual weirdness in Berserk. Like the Casca thing playing out like some sort of secret cuckold fantasy is bad absolutely. But I feel like when it plays with the idea of Schierke X Guts stuff. I find that way worse. Just implying the possibly of that is...yuck.

Berserk just needs to stick with the sweet vanilla that is Guts X Farnese.

Sure, she started with some *coughs awkwardly* sadomasochistic tendencies. But once she got past the whole whipping herself and others kink she turned into a super sweet and nice person. Needs to grow her hair long again though. Symbolism for a change in persona is great and all but she was way cuter with long hair.:nod

Lots of sexual weirdness in Naruto too, to be fair. But usually of the "strangely homoerotic subtext" variety.:eyeroll

I actually disagree here. While yes there is sexual content in Berserk and much of it is explicit, the series is well in tone for a dark fantasy horror series. The Casca situation is no where near some fantasy as you put it, the whole scene is horrific, and is meant to be that way unequivocally.

I also see the Guts - Scherike relationship very differently too. Scherike sees Guts as a sort of father figure in some ways in my eyes. She is teased about her possible crush on him, but it is adorable more than anything. Minus one scene that was not a big deal imo, it really is light-hearted. There is no advancement, nor will there ever be because that is not the purpose of it. It is nothing more than innocent young girls crush at most. Guts acts as a guardian and provides a sense of comfort to many in the group. So I don't really see anything there.

Schierke clearly has a crush on Guts(who wouldn't?) but it's used for her own character development. It can't happen.

I can't imagine Guts with someone other than Casca. Not after all of this. Guts x Casca x Farnese however... :jk

Theme 3
Religion
This post isn't exactly going to be as in depth as the others I've made, although I felt the need to make it after reading something about Berserk apparently exploring themes of religion? So I feel as if it wouldn't exactly be much of a nuance to show that Naruto also has similar themes in its story telling, even if admittedly, they aren't as explored as in other series (For example A Song of Ice and Fire which has R'hloor, The Drowned God and the Seven).
And as expected, the poster boy for this theme is none other than our very own resident immortal:

Jashinism

One of the members of the Akatsuki, who unlike the others, didn't base his abilities of Ninjutsu, Taijutsu or Genjutsu. Instead, he based them off his own religion, Jashinism, so in his own way, he was probably one of the more unique Akatsuki members.
Because he is a member of the Jashin religion, Hidan has immortality. This immortality will end, however, if he does not regularly sacrifice people to Jashin. This is a religion that worships a deity of the same name and where anything less than death and utter destruction is considered a sin. His religion's experiments have led to the creation of his unique abilities; by consuming an opponent's blood and then drawing Jashin's triangular-design on the ground, Hidan can create a voodoo doll-like link with his opponent. Once this link is created, any damage done to Hidan's body is reflected on his opponent, allowing him to kill them by giving himself fatal injuries.Due to the fact that he is immortal though, Hidan is not impaired while doing this, instead finding pleasure in the pain it causes him.

Ninshuu
The first religion, and the predecessor of all modern day techniques in the Naruto verse. It was created by the Sage of the Six Paths, Hagoromo Otsutsuki.
The teachings of Ninshuu were meant to give people a better understanding of themselves, as well as others, and lead the world into an era of peace. Ninshuu would eventually come to be known as ninjutsu, a more weaponised version of the Sage's teachings.
Hagoromo exemplified his teachings by distributing chakra meant to "connect" people's spiritual energies with one another. It would allow people to understand each other without communication and pray for one another's safety.
After being passed over as the successor of ninshū over his brother, and subsequently manipulated by Black Zetsu, Indira Otsutsuki (One of the Sage's sons) was the first to weaponise it into ninjutsu. Others followed his footsteps, using chakra to connect their inner spiritual and physical energies together instead of each other.

The Will of Fire
It is an ideal rooting from Asura Otsutsuki's (The second son of the Sage) belief that love is the key to peace. It's the most prevalent spiritual theme in the series, who's teachings are that the entire village is like a large family unit and every Konoha shinobi with the Will of Fire loves, believes, cherishes, and fights to protect the village, as previous generations had done before them. In some ways, it directly parallels modern Christianity and Buddhism.

Again, I repeat that these themes of course weren't exactly explored in an intricate manner, but they were prevalent enough in the series to warrant at least some mention here, since I'm tackling most of the major themes of the series. Religion would fall well under those. Along with these panels as well:

To be honest I don't think the treatment of female characters in Berserk is really great.

Granted they have some depth and are given some importance unlike Naruto (In which nearly all female is here just to fill the quota and the 2 boys-1 girl recipe empty spot).

I mean that most Berserk females are built around a male character and revolve around him. Casca was introduced as a competent warrior who despite being female could hold her own in a world of battlefields where Men are prevalent. However she quickly devolved into the , well we wan"t say "love interest because it is obviously more complex than that, but a source of romantic rivalry between Guts and Griffith. Then all her actions are droven by her feelings for one or the other. And well, after the eclipse she doesn't really have a personality anymore. (even though she is cute :p)
Farnese's chara development consisted of Guts snapping her out of her fanatism and her falling in love with him, renying her past self to follow him and generally little by little embracing his point of view and admiring him.
Shierke follows a similar process (fortunately with less sexual tension), she starts out as disdainful toward humans and then getting to know Guts, she had some kind of a schoolgirl crush and she acts as a moral support for him to repel his dark side.
Not to mention this infamous scene:

And well, this is way more subjective but I find Farnese and Shierke rather boring.

The only relevant female who really escapes this is Luka (Love her btw x)) but she was here for like one arc so...

After writing this I feel like I'm getting off topic because rather than supporting either of the mangas I just criticized both xD

Anyways, I think I'm now leaning slightly toward Berserk because you reminded me that Berserk's world building is way better handled (even if Naruto's had a huuuge potential, hope they will make up for it in Boruto btw).

Theme 4
Loyalty and Betrayal
Probably the last post I'll make in this round, about something I tackled earlier with Itachi (Though to a lesser extent than how I'm going to handle it in this post). I brought to light earlier about how a shinobi was defined by his loyalty to his or her own village. Regardless of how they treat you, you exist as a tool to further the village's interests. But, how about a scenario where you also turn your back on village even after you served them loyally?
To explore that, we'll touch on two individuals here:

Kisame Hoshigaki's past

Itachi's partner, a shinobi from Kirigakure and one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, Kisame goes by the epithet of Monster of the Mist, by virtue of possessing as much chakra as a Tailed Beast. On a mission by the Mizukage, Kisame had to kill his own platoon members despite them being some of the few peope who accepted him to avoid an information leak. This was followed by a torture and elimination of his own master for aiding the rebellion despite having being his student for years. Kisame being hired from the Mist against the Mist made him stop trusting anyone for his mission's sake. But in his very last moments..:
He bit off his own tongue in order to summon sharks to eat him alive. He actually prefered suicide over being caught by Konoha for Akatsuki's sake, so the group made him trust people again. Honestly, this was one of the best deaths in the series, he died under the motto "no snitching", and I love the little bit we see of his background; plus his final words and conversation with Itachi is so cool, and so true; nobody knows how they really are until faced with something like death.

Kakuzu

In his era, Kakuzu was the strongest shinobi Takigakure had. Ordered to eliminate the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, who many viewed as a threat back then, he ended up failing against the god of Shinobi. Despite the insurmountable danger faced on the mission, what awaited his return to his village was the stigma and harsh punishment associated with the failure of his objective. In response to this treatment, a wrong levied against a shinobi who had put life and limb on the line for his village, Kakuzu came to hold a violent hatred for Takigakure as he escaped from imprisonment. In his flight from the village, Kakuzu killed the village elders, took their hearts, and fled with knowledge of the village's most prized forbidden techniques.

Minato wasn't said to be a self made prodigy. He was said to be a prodigy of the once every generation kind but he was like that since he was a child. There are no self made prodigies in naruto, the idea goes against what prodigies in naruto are. Minato has the distinction of being a prodigy in spite of apparently not having alien genes in him though. But even that is not something minato can really take credit for because no one can influence the amount of talent one is born with.

Dammit @Emperor Spriggan, you keep reminding me of the good old days when naruto was a decent shounen. Unfortunately nothing can change that naruto turned out to be a born prodigy who married a thing that does not meet the basic requirements to be a character whose progeny needs to be dealt with via a combination of holy water and napalm.
