Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

What Milly said :)

Having 2 threads makes it much easier for us to count votes, but yeah I can see why it would be more difficult to quote and comment on each other's nominations :sweat

Also, I think animation quality has improved quite a bit actually. Especially now when you have new technologies like blu-ray and HD. Some anime movies (and even series) need to be watched in blu-ray + HD and even better, on a TV screen (or movie theatre!) and not a computer, to be fully appreciated :amuse That's why I like to watch series like Macross and Gundam on my brother's big blu-ray+HD TV in 1080p.

Besides, only a few series were that well animated back in those days. Now on average animation quality has gone up across the board.

"on my brother's big blu-ray+HD TV in 1080p." -saladesu

though, not macross, nor gundam, unless its Mobile Suit Gundam Wing :D

Drools enviously... INVITE ME OVER DAMNIT! Gives my "smolder" look (it's even better than Flynn's...right...) (Tangled movie reference), or the "sad dog-puppy face" (Bolt movie refernece)... (J/K)

Week(s) long anime movie "sittings" :D

Oh, which anime series to do first... hmm...

-----------------------------------------------------------

the anime's graphics is better, and it's noticable. but, not too old anime graphics isn't that bad, either.

I would say though, that it's not the graphics that set apart old and new, but the other stuff, such as dialogue, more mature/intense content, and etc.

I'm not saying that there's not good old animes too, but some of the dialogue is non-existent... looking at Guyver's dialogue... UGHN!!!!

but, it's hard though for the newer generations to look back and appreciate stuff with worse graphics. but, if the plot/story/dialogue is good, I don't personally care about graphics too much.

for example, Berserk's older graphics, didn't bother me one bit, as it has terrific story/plot.

the new graphics is nice however, I don't think anyone would disagree with this, but good graphics doesn't mean that everything else is good. Especially with current American movies and (japanese) games... awesome graphics, but no story/plot... nothing like the golden years of movies, tv shows/series, and gaming in the 80's and 90's, hehe :D

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

You don't have to nominate every single category, just the ones you want to. Just skip any part you don't care about.
The problem is the readability. There are so many categories that the whole thing can't even be seen in 3 complete rolled screen (And I have a 22')

Besides, only a few series were that well animated back in those days. Now on average animation quality has gone up across the board.
That's true but that average is not at the same level of the top from 7 years ago. Taking into account the evolution of technology, I find this disappointing.

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

I kinda agree with Zellogan, there are a bit too much categories. Plus some of them looks like a manga award round 2 when we just finish voting for them ( best kiss... )
I'm looking forward the categories which are really anime oriented, the series based on manga are biased. who can honnestly said One piece anime is the best ( and I'm a huge fan of the manga )

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

Thanks for the feedback, we'll certainly keep them in mind in the future :amuse

Like you, I'm also looking forward to categories that are "solely" anime oriented. It's inevitable that some categories are going to end up looking like the manga awards, but it is also true that a lot of anime are adapted off manga as well, and if the manga was popular and has a good readership on MH, it's likely to be the same for the anime. So it's really rather inevitable. I personally wouldn't nominate a series for the anime awards just because the manga was good, like you said, that's totally biased :neutral

I dunno about One Piece as I've only read the manga, but there are so many anime adaptations that screwed up and made a mess of their manga counterparts. Most recent example off the top of my head is Nurarihyon no Mago. Great manga, but draggy anime that included too many fillers and changed too many things.

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

Most animes with a weekly release based on a weekly manga are not often very good animes. Animation is often poor, lot of poor HS and/or slow pace. The quality can be good in some episodes, not good in others ... And the atmosphere is even sometimes completely different from the manga

Long animes are simply not as good as long mangas ...
The greatest anime masterpieces were IMO all animes of ~13 or ~26 episodes (evangelion, cowboy beebop, samurai champloo, shigurui, ...).

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

I definitely agree :)

Though I'd say there are also some long anime that are good. I liked FMA:Brotherhood, it was faithful to the manga almost all the way (except for Isaac McDougal in ep1, leaving out the Yoki arc [rather, making Yoki tell it in condensed form instead] and some other minor details), and the quality on the whole was very good. I don't recall there being any distinctly bad episodes, though some episodes did get better animators, hence slightly elevated quality eg Mustang vs a certain homunculus.

I rather short anime, though. Or at least break up a longer series into shorter seasons.

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

I know that a lot of people hate fillers and disgression with regard canon story. I feel differently. After all, when you have already read the manga, seing the anime adaptation months after loose a lot of the freshness, the fillers, when they are good and relevent, can counter that points. Of course I understand that the anime help bringing people reading the manga. But once the anime has helped me catched the manga, i loose a lot of interest in it.

Actually I think FMA did something really clever, the first serie disgress from the canon story, and such become interesting to watch for itself, brotherhood was displayed so that it synchronised with the end of the manga. That allowed you to remember the story in a short number of episodes.

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

It depends, really. Like you said, "when they are good and relevant", then yeah, fillers or anime-only endings can be pretty awesome :amuse But when fillers get too long or are stupid and pointless, that's when they can end up ruining an anime... In some cases, it can be so bad the whole anime gets canceled. Like Rurouni Kenshin - apparently the fillers were so bad (this part is true, definitely -_-;) ratings plummeted and the anime was canceled before it could get to what can be considered the best (or maybe second-best, I myself can't decide if I liked the Kyoto arc better or not) and final arc in RuroKen, the Jinchuu arc (part of it, or the impetus for it, was turned into the Tsuioku-hen OVA, though).

The problem with the way FMA did things is that people who didn't watch the original anime or read the manga would find the starting a little too rushed and some stuff seemingly not explained or developed well enough. That's what my mum complained about, when I let her watch FMA:B :p

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

Well why doesn't she read the manga then ? :-) The 2 mediums complete each others and that is what I find good. When it is just a color version of the manga like one piece is currently it has no interest

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

:crying:cryingjust a small comment on FMA vs FMA:B

FMA had one scene (1-2 episodes only I think) that wasn't in FMA:B which was really emotional and well done, made me cry... looks away and whistles...

it was with that alchemist who thought he lost his young fiancee, so remembering loving-obsessed with her youthful beauty, that he never realized her return to him, as an older woman.

this scene broke my heart... :crying

one of the most memorable "filler" scenes that was in FMA, and not FMA:B

I actually liked the hot "Rose-Hohemhiem's old-loved-wife" main villain BETTER than Father, as Father was boring... seen his archetype too much, it's common... "Rose for short" was cool and HAWT :D

well, Father being the "flasked/imprisoned" humunculis was a cool-neat "back story", but Father himself as "Father" was just boring.

(other emotional one was that girl of the Alchemist father, getting merged with her pet dog by that alchemist father, who had done the same priorly with his wife as well but some other animal... he must like his women being bitches... sorry bad joke... However, this scene was in both FMA and FMA:B)

(Edward, it hurts! :crying the tone the setting-build up my love of dogs and the sweet girl so emotional so sad :crying HK sniffles)

I’m trying to find the first nomination for that song, but I can’t find it. Paprika has another nomination but it is for best insert song.

Blood + Opening 1 - Aozora no Namida It was very hard to choose just one but…it would be a real shame for this song not to be nominated."
I totally forgot how awesome Blood+ openings were, argh! thanks for mentioning/nominating it, hehe :D

ALL (4 of them) of the Blood+ openings are fabulous!

I personally like the one with Saya in a 3 limb crouch, showing her bottom "in the foreground" with her skirt flapping away, and then the camera on her front side with her biting whatever it was that she was biting with her red lips. err, I have it reversed... stupid bad memory of mine, lol !!!

Saya in Blood+ has THEE SEXIEST LIPS/FACE MAKE-UP I've ever seen, RAWR! Her lips are as good as Angelina Jolie's no exagerration! sooo hot!!! Her face is so hot, especially in the first episode, after she's "kissed", hehe :D

Berserk Saya has some really awesome faces/facial expressions too (if you're good at pausing the clips at the right times, hehe), I especially like the one where she's "looking down on Haji" (Saya's so SCARILY SEXY, if only we could see her true-real FULL power, but instead she's weak the entire series, as she's starved of blood, sighs. Diva's hella powerful, but she's a mother, Diva the Mother. Saya, would be way more powerful than even Diva, Saya the WARRIOR, if she only gorged herself on blood like Diva does/did) :D

also the opening/ending with her and Kaori booty swinging/dancing is sooo sexy too! I love how Kaori is wildly swinging her bottom so far left and right, while shy Saya is barely swinging her bottom at all, MMMmmmm !!!! :D

here's the opening of Blood+ that I like along with a funny+matching song with the booty swinging hehe:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jslXPe3jsw&feature=related
(1:10-end of clip)
(1:17-1:18 = SEXY RED LIPS)
(1:18-1:25 =Saya's BOTTOM! RAWR!)
(1:25-end of clip = Sexy Diva, Saya's big sister)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LM6yGDchEA
(hypnotic, mesmerizing, enchanting, spellbinding, hehe)

------------------------------------------------------

Diva's such an awesome villain, giggle giggle laugh laugh:

the Claymore "dance" one:

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

As the big Blood plus fan I know you are, I was totally expecting you to nominate some songs from Blood +, so I was surprised when I read you list of nominations and I didn’t find Blood + songs.

The first op is “Colors of the Heart”, that song is great!! I love that song, but the reason why I didn’t nominate it is because I associate that song more with Ichiruki than with Bleach :D. I remember watching a very cool IchiRuki AMV with that song before I began watching Blood + and since then I can’t help but think of IchiRuki when I listen to that song.

LOL :XD at the Blood + Caramelldansen, for a moment there you got me wondering what opening you were referring to.

And regarding Diva, I agree she is a great villain. If it wasn’t because I’ve already made up my mind about what character I’m going to nominate for that award category, I would def. nominate Diva.
