Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

I was actually replied to you in another thread, here’s what I wrote:

I’m a huge fan of Clannad, so much that I consider myself a Clannad-ite (?) :D But I kind of understand why you didn’t enjoy Clannad as much as Angel Beats. I tried Angel Beats because of Clannad (same team that did Clannad) but I didn’t enjoy it, I stopped watching after the second episode or it was the fist one…the point is that I didn’t enjoy Angel Beats as I had Clannad. Now that I think about it I think I watched Angel Beats with the wrong expectations, expecting it to be something similar to Clannad when both of these series are very different and directed to different audiences and tastes. I guess that is why people who loved Clannad didn’t like Angel Beats and vice versa people who didn’t like Clannad loved Angel Beats.

4 episodes is too early for the real good stuff of Clannad to appear, if I remember correctly the first four episodes only covered the Fuko arc, right? I liked that arc but I wasn't moved to tears by it, however, Kotomi’s arc touched my heart so much that I ended up crying like a baby after watching the last episode of that arc.
Another Clannad fan wrote this:
Though I agree that Clannad takes a looooong time to actually get emotional. The first season sort of just gets everyone to like the characters. The actual bawlfests don't begin until After Story, the second season. And even then, only in the second half of After Story. I only cried once but they were manly tears :crying
So, I’m 100% biased but yes, I totally think you should give Clannad another try. :)

Okay Destiny, I'll give it another try and let you know :thumbs P.S.: Give Angel Beats another try too :p

M3J is the one who wants to rig stuff, if it wasn't obvious or if you don't know him enough. I has evidence :pwnge

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

Stop trying to frame me! :yelling

Anyone know if Yu Yu Hakusho has more than one vote in something? I found it to be a better anime than Dragon Ball Z. Problem is the latter had more exposure.

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

Honestly, there are only 3 real choices for Best Old School:
- Evangelion because it was so amazing that universities did an analyse of the anime
- Dragon Ball ... only for the impact on the manga/anime world.
- Cowboy bebop ... animation still good by today's standards, unique atmosphere, western influence ... & a real cult status

I said the same thing in the manga awards but it's hard to vote for YuYu Hakusho in any category when It's not even the best manga from the author. I agree it's better than Dragon Ball but DB is also 5 years older (the anime ...). And DB was the first of his kind.

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

I know, Coffee :sweat The hype about it was why I pressed on until ep4 :p I guess 4 eps was not sufficient at least for me to see what the hype was all about... Hopefully I will change my mind about it soon :XD

Best Old School is Evangelion for me. Like it's already been said, it was amazing, and did a lot of things differently (hey, this is Gainax we're talking about :D), caused great waves... I think it would really be deserving of this title.

I wouldn't even consider Dragon Ball for this category. Not because I have not watched it, but because it was a manga first that got adapted into an anime. It was the manga that was really popular and amazing (at least back in the day it was, until what it did became hackneyed and cliche), the anime in itself was not phenomenal, as far as I know. If it was not for the character designs, scenes, story from the manga itself, was the anime really that amazing that it should deserve this award...?

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

DB as an anime is exceptional at animation level. The impression of speed was simply amazing. Also, the weight of each punch, of each kick, ... you could feel all that. DB was a new standard to judge fights in animes.

The anime is what made japanimation & manga known worldwide (IMO, much more than the support on paper). I don't consider it as the best old school anime but I think it deserves a place among finalists when you think about the impact it had.

NB: for me, the best old school anime is Cowboy Bebop
NB2: K-dom >> Broadcast on "Canal +" for Cowboy Bebop

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

You are too young Saladesu :-) When we watched Dragon Ball, we didn't even know that manga existed. I think that is what Zellogan refers to. Personally I prefered the Golen cities much more than Dragon ball but the animation has aged also the story is still great. I've heard that they will do a continuation, I hope they won't ruin it
Cowboy bebop is great but I don't remember it being broadcast in France and therefore it lacks the emotional impact.

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

I'm with Saladesu on Dragon Ball. It gets a ton of credit, and rightly so, for being a ground breaker of sorts and for the lasting influences it had on the whole genre. Dragon ball inspired great things but i don't think that says much about how good the anime itself was. It's pacing never seemed like it was able to adapt to animation and it's music/effects i thought were horrendous.

But some of what most people consider the anime classics i never really understood the full appeal of. I mean, i HATED Evangelion. I thought the whole thing was just completely awful. So clearly my opinions are not exactly in line with everybody else's.:p

-----------------------

When i was trying to come up with the best old anime choices. I tried to remember which quality stories that i think really made the best of the anime format. Using the music, the voiced characters, and animated scenes to delivered their story in the best way possible.

To me, when i think of old animes that did that. Cowboy Bebop comes to mind first and foremost.

It's the earliest series i can think of that really seemed to make the best of combining musical and artistic direction in an anime, and use that to make the emotion in a scene almost tangible.

Due to zidane's avatar, I actually wanna see Cowboy Bebop.

Even though it's not supposedly the best manga from the author, it can still be voted. There can be some elements that makes it superior to others, like best fight or best design or something.

Dragon Ball was trendsetting, and I will always love Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z up to the end of Cell Saga, but storywise, it's not the best nor is it as thought-provoking. Pretty hilarious though. :XD

I have read only Yu Yu Hakusho from the mangaka's work, but it's pretty good to me. I'm interested in Hunter x Hunter, but it should be finished first. <_< Did the mangaka have any more of his anime out or just Yu Yu Hakusho?

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

I beg to differ on DBZ:

the Freeza Saga was a very good story, it's not a deep-thinking plot, but as a story/emotional it was done very well (albiet it took forever to get to Freeza, but that was part of the build up/suspense that made it so good).

It was awesome how Goku got all peeved and hard-bottomed, after Freeza killed Krillion, and finally did the SSJ1, moving right in front of Freeza when he was pointing his finger for his powerful-fast thin beam attack on Gohan taking the others away to the ship, and than Goku completely pwning Freeza, hehe :D

after Freeza Saga it got more boring (until Cell Battle and Majin Buu Battle), as it lost whatever story/plot it had, or it just repeated the same story/plot over and over.

As you guys can see in the post above, not all the award categories have 5 official nominees. That’s why we would like to ask for you guy’s help in breaking the ties for some categories and in nominating (in the nomination thread) some other nominees for a couple of categories that don’t enough nominees. :)

You will have a week to vote for your favorite nominees and help them move on to the voting round. ^_^ All you have to do is cast your vote using the polls in the respective threads for the various award categories. And don’t forget to nominate more nominees for those categories without enough nominees.

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

Undone individual thread/categories (needs more nominations):

1. Best Alteration of Story Line
2. Best Adaptation - Visual Novel or Games

We need more nominations for these two categories, nominate away!

-------------------------------------

And in the individual threads, we have polls up as tie breakers to finish off getting all 5 of the official nominations selected, so go vote in the polls of the individual threads!

----------------------------------

(we are *NOT* in the actual voting stage yet, we're trying to get all of the nominations seleted still for the real voting to come later!!!)

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

Under the best animation (movie), there are separate nominations for Mononoke Hime and Princess Mononoke. Are they different? or are they Hayao's film?

Also, can I vote for nominations just to break the tie, even if my previous nomination is already an official nominee?

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

I realize I haven't watched a lot of Visual Novels/Games-turned-Anime... I did already nominate Fate/Stay Night but just throwing this out here: Pokemon. I mean, who didn't watch Pokemon when they were young? :amuse I played the games too, and really enjoyed it :XD If I could nominate another, I would nominate Pokemon, even if just for the phenomenon it was all over the world.

Ah, they are the same thing. Thank you for pointing this out, we will fix it :)

Will get back to you on this one :)

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

Mononoke (a series) is completely (I think*) different from Mononoke Hime/Princess Mononoke (a movie)

*I haven't seen Mononoke, but I have seen Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke - English translation)

so be clear and careful when/if nominating one of these two!

As for Best Alteration of a Storyline... Claymore... I think the transition from the original manga story to that 2 and a half episode ending was great...I liked it a lot:thumbs...maybe Hege will back me up on this, and add some good reasons:tem
actually, it's quite despised/hated by most people, as it so deviates from the beloved manga.

for me personally, it wasn't that bad of an ending, my only real complaint is that (last) episode 26 's battle with Priscilla wasn't epic (good and long) enough :( and that it ending in ~"good/happy way"... Claymore is a DARK fantasy, no "happy endings" allowed! RAWR!

(though, the fanservice treat... of Priscilla... after she was defeated in episode 26 was very nice... hehe - I'm such a perv! :D)

I didn't nominate Claymore, because I didn't/don't feel its enough of a change, only the last few episodes were altered (as it had to conclude itself), as otherwise, it actually follows the manga quite closely with only small-minor details being different

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

another question. sounds stupid, but, we can't break a tie for a nominee that we have nominated before right? haha! i almost voted for Haruhi on the light novel category, good thing, i've read the breakdown of nominations and remembered that I was the one who nominated it.

So, i guess it'd help if the breakdowns are there for every category just to refresh the memories of the forgetful voters like me!

Re: The MangaHelpers Anime Awards Discussion Thread

Erm...isn't Kamina a supporting character? ::blinkI love him too but Simon was the lead not Kamina. That was a support role...wasn't it?:s

Is it too late to nominate or vote. Because Kyoko Mogami should be in the BEST Female lead category. There is no one that can top her. only Sanako stands a chance against her. Truly..
